Welcome

Good morning everyone! Here we are already sliding into the end of May. My, the time has been passing so very quickly—too quickly! I can't seem to catch up with the many things I still need to do, and that continue to pile up. One day at a time — it's not just on your Journey — it's for all aspects of your life.

This edition of my newsletter is coming out a bit early, as Al and I will be going on an Alaskan Cruise for 8 days with little or no Internet connection. We are really looking forward to celebrating our 32nd Anniversary at sea, and visiting Alaskan ports, as well as one Canadian one.

I would like to take a minute and send a huge THANK YOU to Lisa at Hungry Girl. Flo, my good friend, and a fellow Administrator on our Message Boards, stopped by Lisa's book signing for her new book: Hungry Girl, Recipes and Survival Strategies for Guilt-Free Eating in the Real World. Flo was so nice to remember me, and to pick up a copy for me. (Thank you Flo!) She even got Lisa to sign it, and Lisa wrote a little note to me as well.

Flo found Lisa to be as wonderful and vibrant in person as she is on her fantastic, informative, and inspiring Hungry Girl website. If you don't have a copy of this awesome book, now's the time to pick one up—Al and I even found that Costco is selling it! You won't be sorry you did!

It's time for a nice visit...let's find our comfy chair and get settled in. Don't forget your tall glass of refreshing water and your beautiful SMILE.

Staying the Course of Your Journey
    By Dotti

How many of us are happily going along the course of our Journey and then wham? We get off course and it seems to take us forever to get back on the right course again. I can honestly say I've been living that scenario for quite awhile. I'll wager a lot of you have too. So, what do we do about it? How can we stay the course when the tough times hit? Let's see if we can come up with some answers during our visit today.

One of the first things we have to do is set goals. Setting goals on this Journey of ours is a very important tool to staying the course. If you set the wrong goals or set goals that you, nor anyone else, can ever achieve, guess what? Yes, you will get off course. Why set ourselves up? Why not sit down and take some time to really think about our goals for this Journey of ours. The rules for setting these goals are very straightforward and should be adhered to if you want to be your best on your Journey.
  • Make sure each goal you set has a deadline. This will give you a date to work towards and help keep you on the right course of your Journey.

  • Make sure each goal is specific. For example, don't say, "I want to lose 25 lbs." or "I want to lose 25 lbs. in 10 weeks." There are no specifics to how you will lose the 25 lbs. Why not say instead, "I will workout at the gym 3 times a week, stay within my point (calorie, etc) range and drink all my water." The first two goals are very vague goals, while the second goal is very specific as to how to lose your 25 lbs.

  • Never set goals that will leave you feeling like a failure—the all or nothing mindset. If you set a goal like, "I will lose 5 pounds this month," how will you feel when you come up short and only lose 4 lbs? I'll tell you from experience that you will feel like you failed at your itty-bitty goal — heck, it was only 5 pounds! You won't even see that you drank all your water, stayed within your Program and got to the gym 3 times a week for that month. Nope, all you will see is, "I didn't make my goal."

  • Make sure your goals have two categories — Long-term goals and short-term goals. All your short-term goals that you accomplish will lead you up to accomplishing your long-term goals. You should be able to achieve your short-term goals in a week to a month. When you reach your short-term goals you will be motivated to keep on keeping on to reach your long-term goals.

  • Make sure you set goals that you can achieve. When you set a goal that you cannot, in any way possible achieve, you are setting yourself up for failure. Take into consideration your age, weight, level of fitness, medical issues, etc when you are setting up your goal. Remember, the goal should always be "Achieve the Goal" and if you set up barriers you will never "Achieve the Goal".

  • Always remember that you are NEVER a failure if you don't meet one of your goals. Making goals is not an easy thing. There are a lot of things to consider, and another person's goal might not be yours. The main thing to remember is that you always have the chance to make a new goal! (You can even use the same goal, but start over at the beginning and take another try at it. This works!)

  • Keep your goals where you can see them to help you stay motivated. Don't be afraid to revise your short and long-term goals whenever you feel necessary.
Another way to help you stay your course on your Journey is to write down different things like, "How will being on this Journey help me?" and "How will not being on the Journey hurt me?" By writing your thoughts down you are thinking about these very important things. You can also use these lists to help you always have a "reason" at hand as to why you want to stay on this Journey, no matter what.

Let's look at some of the ways that being on the Journey will help us first.
  • Living your healthy lifestyle and eating right will definitely help improve your mood. Why? Because you will be happy and in control of YOU. Because you will be putting the right food in your body to fuel it and give you the energy and resources needed to have a happy, healthy mood.

  • You will be healthier and your checkups will continue to improve at the doctor's. Your blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes will all improve as you continue your healthy lifestyle and drop some weight.

  • You will take more pride in yourself and dress for success. You will get dressed each morning, look in the mirror and be proud of who you are becoming. Oh wow! Isn't it wonderful?

  • You will want to socialize more with your friends and family. Let's face it. When we are not on the right course of our Journey we are not on the right course with our friends and family either. We want to stay in the house and not be seen. Again, I know this from experience. I just hibernate. Sad, but true.

  • You will never get dehydrated because you're drinking all your water daily. One of the many ways you are now taking care of yourself while staying the course of your Journey.

  • You will be setting a good example and believe it or not, many will follow. How can that not be good for you? You are warm and toasty inside every time someone asks you, "How did you do it?" You know you might just be giving that person the "key to success" on their Journey.
Let's look at some of the ways that not being on the Journey will hurt us now.
  • You will most likely gain weight. I can assure you that you will most definitely gain weight.

  • Your mood will definitely be classified as "moody". You are going to be all over the place scrambling to lose a few pounds by swimsuit season. You are not on the course of your Journey so this is not going to be an easy task.

  • Your energy level will be low and you will not be getting out socializing as much. Who in their right mind wants to get dressed, go out and make small talk when they feel they will be the talk of the week? NOT ME!

  • Your diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure will not be in the "I'm pleased with your progress" talk with your doctor. By taking care of yourself and your body you are going to have a lot of struggles, medically as the years go by. I, myself, am looking at a knee and shoulder replacement sometime in my future — not fun!

  • You are looking at a lifetime of regrets of what could have been. Now is the time to get back up on that wagon and make this the greatest darn Journey you have ever been on.
Another way to help you stay on course for your Journey is to make sure you have written down your long-term goal, and are going over it occasionally to see the big picture.

How many of you have goals that have been 'sitting' around for over a year? This is the time to create some new goals. Nothing wrong with that! Keep the excitement of accomplishing a goal ever present.

Here's an idea - how about making copies of what you've written: your goals; ways that being on your Journey and staying the course will help you; and ways that not being on the Journey will hurt you. Keep the copies in a folder and every week mail yourself one with a pretty envelope and a bit of your favorite perfume on it. When you receive this "special delivery" you will be reminded of how important you are, and how important it is to Stay the Course of Your Journey!

You can do this, one goal at a time. As you accomplish the small goals you will be well on your way to accomplishing your large goal.

I hope I've given you a few ideas to help you to Stay the Course of your Journey. After all, isn't that one of our main journey goals: To Stay the Course?

I'll be right beside you, holding your hand, as we walk the Journey together.

Hugs! Dotti

Food Finds

Here are a few more of my food finds. Weight Watchers is coming out with more and more convenient foods—measured and ready to eat. That's my kind of food: individually pre-packaged and low-point. Here are a few I found recently at Super Wal-Mart.

Baked Fruit Ambrosia

Makes 4 servings
  • 2 medium oranges
  • 1 — 8 oz can pineapple tidbits (juice pack), drained
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp shredded coconut
  • Fresh raspberries, optional

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Finely shred enough peel from one of the oranges to make 1/2 tsp peel; set it aside while you peel and section the two oranges. Cut orange sections into bite-sized pieces.

Divide the orange pieces and pineapple among four 6-oz custard cups. Sprinkle with orange peel and cinnamon. Top with coconut. Bake about 15 minutes or until fruit is heated through and the coconut is golden. Fresh raspberries make a very nice garnish.

    "Enjoying Weight Loss"

As many of you know, I use Dr. Roberta's Enjoying Weight Loss Hypnosis CDs as one of my "tools" on my lifelong Journey to a healthier me. They continue to be an irreplaceable part of my Journey back to goal.

In addition to offering their excellent hypnosis line of helpful programs, the Hypnosis Network now has a free E-Book available called Scientific Weight Loss Secrets: Tips from the Psychological Research, written by Roberta Temes, Ph.D. The book is filled with weight loss ideas and it is completely free to you. Just Click Here, and when you arrive, move to the bottom of the page and click on the appropriate link to download the book.

The Hypnosis Network is continuing to offer Dr. Roberta's Enjoying Weight Loss Hypnosis CDs for $97. For anyone who is "hypnosis-friendly" (about 90% of the human population can derive some benefit from hypnosis) the money could not be better spent. If you are interested in learning more about Dr. Roberta's Enjoying Weight Loss Hypnosis CDs you can read our review at http://www.dwlz.com/hypnosisreview.html. I would not recommend them if they hadn't of worked for me.

Here is what the Hypnosis Network says:

Dr. Roberta's Enjoying Weight Loss was tested and recommended by the National Health & Wellness Club.

In the National Health & Wellness Club's Product Test Program, club members conduct their own independent tests of health and wellness products. The fifty independent testers who tried Enjoying Weight Loss gave the program a 92% approval rating.

    3 Easy Payments!

The folks at Hypnosis Network have been receiving a lot of positive feedback about their new program of accepting 3 equal payments for these CDs. They rightly feel that your decision should be whether or not the product is right for you, and not about whether you can afford it.

Click Here to go directly to their site and find out more about the Hypnosis Network, and how you can order your CDs.

Thank you to all of you who continue to be there for me and support me in my Journey to becoming a healthier me. Thank you for caring!

And remember, "If you always do what you always did, you'll always get what you always got."

    Hugs! Dotti

What kind of fish is in that Filet-O-Fish? Pollock, the most commonly used fish in breaded and battered retail dishes.

Which food is the hidden danger at McDonalds? Try the Chicken Selects Premium Breast Strips (5 pieces) with Creamy Ranch Sauce, which comes in at 830 calories/55 g fat/48 g carbs. WOW!

The Weight Commander is an awesome program for your Journey. I highly recommend it to all those who are on a Journey of their own. It is a wonderful program to track your progress on any weight loss program you are using. He has many tips and ideas throughout his program which will help you to be successful on your Journey.

And for those who don't feel comfortable downloading software, or who cringe when Windows gives them another unnecessary warning about running perfectly safe software, Michael has created a wonderful online version of Weight Commander, where you can always access your information with privacy, with no worry about trying to transfer it from computer to computer when you switch. You can of course still get the software version (which continues to work very well, even on my Windows Vista computer), but the online version of Weight Commander is a wonderful new option! Indulge Yourself...

    1. Declare a Sunday for yourself on any weekday. Take a personal day off of work and enjoy a day of indolence or a day crammed with as many things that make you happy that you can fit into eight hours of playing hooky.

    2. Spend an afternoon going over your school yearbooks, camp yearbooks, or scrapbooks of childhood souvenirs. (I just did this and it was so much fun looking back)

    3. Take a long, hot soak in the tub by candlelight.

    4. Subscribe to a new and exciting magazine you've been interested in.

    5. Install soft-colored light bulbs in some or all of your lamps and see what a difference the hues make in your house when you turn them on.

    6. Give yourself permission to sit down (right now!) and simply daydream for at least 15 minutes.

10 Tips to Get Your Daily Fiber

    1. Scan for Bran — Look for "bran" and "whole wheat" on product packages and ingredient labels. These ingredients can help boost fiber intake. [1/2 cup Fiber One cereal = 14g fiber]

    2. Grab the Whole Food — Munch on a whole piece of fruit, in place of drinking a glass of juice. You'll get the nutrients and the fiber too. [1 medium orange = 3g fiber]

    3. Savor the Skins — Eat fruit and vegetables with the skin on. Eating the skin helps to bump up the fiber, plus it provides texture and a bonus of other nutrients. [1 medium baked potato with skin on = 4g fiber]

    4. Screen for Beans — Replace your typical side dishes with high-fiber dried peas and beans, such as kidney, pinto, lentils or black-eyed peas. These fiber-packed legumes make it easier to meet daily fiber goals. [1/2 cup canned red kidney beans = 8g fiber]

    5. Go Nuts — Jazz up salads, vegetables, snacks and desserts with almonds, sunflower seeds or soy nuts. Nuts and seeds add fiber and fun-to-chew crunch foods. [1 ounces roasted almonds = 3g fiber]

    6. Be Berry Wild — Choose raspberries, blackberries and boysenberries to add variety to your cereals. These berries have twice the fiber of many other fruit selections. [1/2 cup fresh raspberries = 4g fiber]

    7. Bring on the Brown — Use brown rice instead of white. Switch to whole-wheat pasta, whole-wheat flour, whole-wheat breads and whole-grain crackers instead of regular white versions. [1 cup brown rice — 3g fiber]

    8. Skip the Chips — Select snacks that are a good source of fiber. Instead of potato chips, go for low-fat popcorn, whole-grain pretzels or oven-crisped whole-wheat pita triangles. [3 cups popcorn = 4g fiber]

    9. Drink Up — Water is a healthy beverage choice — especially as you up the fiber. Your body needs more water to help process the added fiber you eat. Aim for eight 8-oz glasses of water each day.

    10. Sneak in some Fiber One — Mix Fiber One cereal into your favorite side dishes or top yogurt, salads or oatmeal. Even a small amount of Fiber One makes a difference. [1/4 cup Fiber One for sprinkling = 7g fiber]

I've also updated the following restaurants:

For all future updates of foods/restaurants with nutritional information I am now adding in the sodium and protein when it is available.

I'm done converting all the restaurants through the D's, some E's and some scattered ones like Subway, etc. Of course as I update and add new restaurants they will be in the new format with the HTML and the Palm download on the individual restaurant pages. Hopefully you will find this easier; all in one place.

Thanks for being so patient. I am the only one working on the restaurants, AND on my whole website, except these areas of Al's:

And please don't forget to come and visit DWLZ!   Open 24 hours!

If you are not already a regular visitor, it is time for you to come and make yourself at home at my web page, where you will find lots of tips on losing weight, and help in picking out good things to eat at your favorite restaurants, while still remaining on program. We have motivation, success stories, and much more. It is a lot like Disneyland: you'll have lots of fun, and you could never see it all in just one day! However, unlike Disneyland, Dotti's [ http://www.dwlz.com ] is open 24 hours a day, every day.

*Whenever possible, I calculate ALL my Points on my Offline Points Calculator in the Half Points Mode, which rounds UP to the nearest Half Point. This keeps my site consistent. All point values shown in BLACK are calculated with the 10-gram fiber cap [Original 123 Success Points]. When there is a difference with the 4 gram fiber cap calculation, I show the points value for that in RED.
