Physical Activity ~ How Does It Help Our Journey
      By Dotti

Did you know that by adding physical activity into your lifestyle your Journey becomes much more powerful? That is because by adding regular physical activity to your Journey gets you better results on the scale. By watching what you eat AND getting in plenty of physical activity, you have the two main tools for success on your Journey. These two things work best together. If you implement regular physical activity into your Journey now, it will be in place (as a habit) when you hit the maintenance stage (yes, you will be hitting that stage, not to worry). Physical activity is one of the main keys to maintaining your weight loss.

Let's take a look at "physical activity". What would you consider physical activity? How about vacuuming, dusting, mopping, doing the dishes, doing laundry, exercise classes, swimming; the list could go on! Physical activity is any activity that requires energy and produces progressive health benefits.

We all know that by adding physical activity to our lives we are burning calories and reducing our waistlines but did you know you are also reducing your risk of developing serious healthy problems such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure and osteoporosis?

What is another great benefit from physical activity? Well, I know when I take my walks with Al and go to the gym I feel so much better for the whole day. Really! Do I want to do it in the first place? Sometimes yes, sometimes no - but I'm never sorry when I include some sort of physical activity in my day. I just seem to look and feel better when I'm done. Why is that? It's because the more active you are the more energetic you are. One begets the other. Amazing huh? I know that there are days when I sit in this computer chair for long hours. I get up to take a walk and it is like I've been revitalized, awoken from a sluggish state.

Physical activity preserves and builds your muscle while increasing your metabolism, which is the rate in which you burn calories. So, that being said, the more physical activity you include in your life the more calories you will burn. If you just cut your calories but don't have any physical activity going on then your body will lost muscle tissue along with body fat. This is not a good thing because your body needs muscle to support your body in all areas. On top of that it helps you to burn more calories, which is what we want. Activity keeps you from losing muscle as you lose weight. Along the way it's even building muscle - it can't get any better than that. You are going to appear trimmer even though the scale is a little slow in catching up with all your activity.

What are some of the other benefits of getting activity into your life? One benefit that I like is that when you are physically active you are not as hungry. You're also able to make better food choices when you do get hungry. Physical activity is also very good for relieving stress. I bet you didn't know that? Well, it does! The next time you are under a lot of stress go for a walk or take an unscheduled trip to the gym. You will soon be on your way to a brighter mood and your problems you were stressing about will seem a million miles away. Physical activity helps you to think more clearly while relieving tension and increasing circulation. An added bonus is that you won't be stress-eating; you'll be stress-moving which will save you a whole lot of added calories that lead to added pounds.

One of the important side effects of getting regular physical activity is you will sleep more soundly and feel more rested when you wake up. Studies have shown that a lack of sufficient sleep may alter your body's metabolism, making weight loss all the harder to accomplish. Most sleep experts recommend at least 8 hours of sleep a night for adults. This is certainly an area I need to work on.

Can physical activity help your self-confidence? Oh yes! If you are including regular physical activity into your lifestyle you will notice a boost in your self-confidence because your strength, stamina, flexibility, and appearance will be improved.

It really is never too late to start including regular physical activity into your life. Experts recommend some physical activity every day for adults, aiming for at least 30 minutes a day. To help lose weight they recommend working up to 60 minutes of moderate-intensity activity daily. The 60 minutes can be spread out during the day - you do not have to do it all at one time. Believe it or not, it is still just as effective when you split up your activity. If you wish to burn the most fat and get the most health benefits, it is recommended that you include different types of activities. So, what are some types of physical activity?

Aerobic Activities are activities in which you get huffing and puffing.  You are increasing your heart rate and breathing speed.  You are using your larger muscles in your arms and legs for an extended period of time.  Aerobic activities are very good for help in losing weight because they help improve circulation, strengthen your heart, lower your blood pressure and burn the most calories.  A few aerobic activities would be brisk walking, playing racquetball and dancing.

Strength-Building Activities are stop and go activities. Strength-building activities burn some calories but not as much as aerobic activities.  The main thing that strength-building (or weight training) does is it helps to tone and strengthen certain muscle groups, which in turn helps you do aerobic exercise and gives increased support for your bones.  You can do this type of activity in a gym or at home. Some strength-building activities would be weight training, calisthenics, and yoga—which help build and strengthen your muscles.

Stretching helps you stay flexible. You should always stretch before and after your aerobic and strength-building activities because it will help keep your muscles from tightening and becoming injured.

If you were to schedule regular activity into your lifestyle what physical activities would you choose?  Would you schedule structured activities such as exercise classes or recreational activities, into your day or would you rather focus on short segments of moderate-intensity physical activity such as gardening or housework?  Some more moderate-intensity activities would be swimming, bicycling and raking leaves, believe it or not. One thing to remember is that the more vigorous you are while doing your activity the shorter the workout time necessary get the same healthy benefits.  Something to think about.  As for me, I'm not a big planner, except to say I will walk/go to gym 3 times a week and leave it at that.  If I do more, I'm good.  If not, I've accomplished what I said I would for the week.  This works best for me. We all have to go at this "activity" thing in our own way.  There is no right or wrong way - whatever works for you as long as you are moving. One very important thing to remember is to work up to your goals slowly.  We want to get the healthy benefits from physical activity not the unhealthy benefits from overdoing.

There are so many ways to get some daily physical activity in.  Al and I love taking pictures with our digital cameras so we bought ourselves a season pass to our Portland Zoo.  What a great place to go to get some physical activity, take some breathtaking photos, enjoy the fresh air and by buying the season pass we are helping to keep our Portland Zoo up and running.  I would be devastated to see that go away.  We are having fun AND getting our physical activity in, without even thinking about it.  Anyone who has kept up with Al and I know that we also enjoy hiking and have seen some gorgeous waterfalls during our hikes here in the Pacific Northwest.  Fun times and who would guess we are getting our activity in?  Not me! If you'd like to check out our hiking pages with our very own photos and Al's wonderful write-ups of our hikes please click here or go to http://www.dwlz.com/CFHC/

Why not start to include physical activity into your life now.  Why wait?  The benefits are tremendous and you will feel like a new person!  Better yet, I'll join you. Al and I walked to the gym today (3 miles round trip) and while at the gym I did 30 minutes on the elliptical.  I'm feeling it tonight but I've also felt great and in control of everything today.  What a feeling!

Well folks it's time to sign off for now.  Have an awesome OP (on Program) couple of weeks and don't forget to SMILE Smile that beautiful SMILE Smile of yours. Until next time...

Hugs!  Dotti

Motivation

The Power of Words

A group of frogs were traveling through the woods, and two of them fell into a deep pit. All the other frogs gathered around the pit. When they saw how deep the pit was, they told the two frogs that they were as good as dead. The two frogs ignored the comments and tried to jump up out of the pit with all of their might. The other frogs kept telling them to stop, that they were as good as dead. Finally, one of the frogs took heed to what the other frogs were saying and gave up. He fell down and died. The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again, the crowd of frogs yelled at him to stop the pain and just die. He jumped even harder and finally made it out. When he got out, the other frogs said, "Did you not hear us?" The frog explained to them that he was deaf. He thought they were encouraging him the entire time.

This story teaches two lessons:

1. There is power of life and death in the tongue. An encouraging word to someone who is down can lift them up and help them make it through the day.

2. A destructive word to someone who is down can be what it takes to kill them. Be careful of what you say.

Speak life to those who cross your path. The power of words....it is sometimes hard to understand that an encouraging word can go such a long way. Anyone can speak words that tend to rob another of the spirit to continue in difficult times. Special is the individual who will take the time to encourage another.

Be Special to others.

Quiznos - Anything on Program?

I just picked up this wonderful book called, Eat This, Not That by David Zinczenko, Editor-in-Chief of Men's Health, with Matt Goulding.  It is filled with thousands of simple food swaps that can save you lots of pounds!  Here is what he says about Quiznos, one of my favorite places BTW!

Quiznos is the second-largest sandwich chain in America, behind Subway but they are the last major sub franchise to offer nutritional information about their sandwiches.  Wonder why?

The recommendation is to choose the Small Honey Bourbon Chicken on Wheat Bread which comes in at 310 calories/4 grams of fat (1 saturated)/920 mg sodium.  A few other picks are the Small Black Angus Sandwich coming in at 520 calories/16.5 g fat (7 saturated)/1550 mg sodium and the Small Tuscan Turkey on Rosemary Parmesan without cheese coming in at 390 calories/14 g fat (3 saturated)/1185 mg sodium. Opt for honey bourbon mustard sauce over mayo or creamy dressings to add the flavor without the guilt.

Most of us would think the Classic Cobb Flatbread Salad would be a good pick, right?  WRONG!  It definitely sounds like a good choice but the bacon, bleu cheese crumbles and ranch dressing tips the scale on this salad.  You can order it without the wall of flatbread to save on calories and carbs.

Did you know that you'd have to bicycle 30 miles across the state of Delaware to burn the 1510 calories in a large Chicken Carbonara? (Oh no, my very favorite sandwich there! frown )

You can get a Small Traditional Sandwich with very little damage to your program - 430 calories/21 g fat - even with three kinds of meat, cheese and ranch dressing, this is still one of the healthiest items on the menu.

Hopefully, some day Quiznos will supply us with nutritional values so we can make healthy choices while eating at their establishment.

"Enjoying Weight Loss"

As many of you know, I use Dr. Roberta's Enjoying Weight Loss Hypnosis CDs as one of my "tools" on my lifelong Journey to a healthier me. They continue to be an irreplaceable part of my Journey back to goal.

In addition to offering their excellent hypnosis line of helpful programs, the Hypnosis Network now has a free E-Book available called Scientific Weight Loss Secrets: Tips from the Psychological Research, written by Roberta Temes, Ph.D. The book is filled with weight loss ideas and it is completely free to you. Just Click Here, and when you arrive, move to the bottom of the page and click on the appropriate link to download the book.

The Hypnosis Network is continuing to offer Dr. Roberta's Enjoying Weight Loss Hypnosis CDs for $97. For anyone who is "hypnosis-friendly" (about 90% of the human population can derive some benefit from hypnosis) the money could not be better spent. If you are interested in learning more about Dr. Roberta's Enjoying Weight Loss Hypnosis CDs you can read our review at http://www.dwlz.com/hypnosisreview.html. I would not recommend them if they hadn't of worked for me.

Here is what the Hypnosis Network says:

Dr. Roberta's Enjoying Weight Loss was tested and recommended by the National Health & Wellness Club.

In the National Health & Wellness Club's Product Test Program, club members conduct their own independent tests of health and wellness products. The fifty independent testers who tried Enjoying Weight Loss gave the program a 92% approval rating.

3 Easy Payments!

The folks at Hypnosis Network have been receiving a lot of positive feedback about their new program of accepting 3 equal payments for these CDs. They rightly feel that your decision should be whether or not the product is right for you, and not about whether you can afford it.

Click Here to go directly to their site and find out more about the Hypnosis Network, and how you can order your CDs.

Thank you to all of you who continue to be there for me and support me in my Journey to becoming a healthier me. Thank you for caring!

And remember, "If you always do what you always did, you'll always get what you always got."

Hugs! Dotti

Creole Beans and Rice

Makes 8 servings
  • 2 cans (14 1/2 oz each) peeled, no salt added tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 cup uncooked rice
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup chopped celery
  • 1 cup chopped carrots
  • 1 cup chopped green bell pepper
  • 1 tbsp ground cumin
  • 1 tbsp chili powder

10 Healthy Indulgences for Your Sweet Tooth

1.  Fudgsicles.
T
hey are cold, chocolate and only 100 calories each.

2.  Frozen Fruit Bars.
They are sweet, with real fruit and 80 calories or less.

3.  Sherbet or Sorbet.  Close to ice cream, but healthier: 100 calories per 1/2 cup versus 150 calories in vanilla ice cream.

4.  Angel Food Cake with fresh-cut strawberries and chocolate sauce.  It tastes decadent, but it's only 120 calories versus 250 calories in yellow cake with chocolate frosting.

5.  Pudding made with low-fat milk.  Cool, creamy and easy to make, plus it's high in calcium.  150 calories per 1/2 cup.

6.  Fig Newtons or gingersnaps. Love cookies?  Keep these in your cupboard, and you'll get less fat and more fiber.

7.  Fruit crisp instead of fruit pie.  Seems like a small change, but the change of crust saves about 100 calories and 10 grams of fat per serving.

8.  Cinnamon Raisin Bagel with 2 tbsp fat-free cream cheese instead of a glazed doughnut.  Switching out the morning piece of cake gives you close to the same amount of calories but saves you about 10 grams of fat.

9.  One ounce of good-quality Dark Chocolate.  It has less than 150 calories, but it's packed with satisfying flavor - and antioxidants.

10. Ten Jelly Beans.  Get that "I'm having some candy" feeling for only 50 calories - and no fat.  Of course, jelly beans aren't particularly nutritious.

The Truth About Fitness

Subject: Fitness
The truth about fitness- Please read carefully

Q: I’ve heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?

A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that’s it. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that’s like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?

A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and Corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more then an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat Chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass. (green leafy vegetables) And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended allowance of vegetable slop.

Q: Is beer and wine bad for me?

A: Look, it goes to the earlier point about fruits and vegetables. As we all know, scientists divide everything in the world into three categories, animal, mineral and vegetable. We all know that beer and wine are not animal and they are not on the periodic table of elements, so that only leaves one thing, right? My advice, have a burger and a beer and enjoy your liquid vegetables.

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?

A: Well if you have a body and you have body fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?

A: Can’t think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is No Pain – Good.

Q: If I stop smoking, will I live longer?

A: Nope, Smoking is a sign of individual expression and peace of mind. If you stop you’ll probably stress yourself to death in record time.

Q: Are fried foods bad for you?

A: You are not listening. Fried Foods are fried in vegetable oil. In fact they’re permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: What’s the secret to healthy eating?

A: Thicker Gravy.

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?

A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had!

Thank You Joan

Did you know...?

Our Journey is not just about weight loss; it's about constantly learning new things... I'll bet you did not know where English muffins came from?  I sure didn't.

They are called English muffins but they are not from England.  Despite their name, people in England never heard of or saw English muffins until they were imported from the United States. In the late 1890's, Samuel Thomas baked the first English muffins - not in England, but in America - and created the Thomas' English Muffin brand.

Thomas got the idea from baking dough on griddles, which gave the muffins their distinctive "nooks and crannies" that hold gobs of butter and jam. English muffins became an essential ingredient for an all-American creation, Eggs Benedict - a linguistic oddity that calls for Canadian bacon, Hollandaise sauce, and English muffins, but is very American.

A chef at New York's Waldorf-Astoria hotel first made eggs Benedict shortly after English muffins were invented. The Waldorf chef made Eggs Benedict for, and named them after Sam Benedict, a businessman who was a good customer.

DWLZ Website Updates

I am in the process of changing my individual restaurant pages to include the Palm Pilot download and HTML download of that particular restaurant. I have gotten through Dunkin Donuts. Dotti's Weight Loss Zone

And please don't forget to come and visit DWLZ!   Open 24 hours!

If you are not already a regular visitor, it is time for you to come and make yourself at home at my web page, where you will find lots of tips on losing weight, and help in picking out good things to eat at your favorite restaurants, while still remaining on program. We have motivation, success stories, and much more. It is a lot like Disneyland: you'll have lots of fun, and you could never see it all in just one day! However, unlike Disneyland, Dotti's [ http://www.dwlz.com ] is open 24 hours a day, every day.
