Week 308 Update

I woke up early with a neck ache. I tried to get back to sleep, but I knew it was no good. When this happens all I can do is get up. So, I stopped fighting it and at 02:30 I stepped on Mr. Scale and he said, "205.5 pounds!"

The temperature was in the low 50s and it was raining. The last few days have been sunny and yesterday it was all the way up to 79°. So, the rain and cooler temperatures today will be welcomed by me. I dropped 3 pounds from my weigh-in last week. I am down 5.5 pounds from two weeks ago, but I still have a ways to go to get back into my target range. I journaled every day this week, and that is a nice improvement. I averaged eating 37.79 points-per-day and I was aiming for less than 40. I got in at least 6 cups of water every day, and I walked 6.4 miles for the week. This week was a good one, and I hope that it will be the start of trend for the future.

On Sunday, one of our clocks was displaying the wrong time. It thought Daylight Saving Time had kicked in, because that is when it should have been if they hadn't changed it. I just changed its time zone and it should be good until October. They pushed the end of Daylight Saving Time out as well. So, I am sure we will have more problems at the end of October when DST would have normally ended, and again in November, when it actually will end.

Tuesday Dotti and I needed to pick something up from the drugstore, and so we walked there and then back home. We also stopped at Target on the way back, which is a mile from our house. I can tell that we haven't been doing a lot of walking lately, because I feel pretty tired the next day after we do a walk. However, it is getting better with each walk.

Dotti handed off her newsletter to me just before midnight on Wednesday. I was asleep at the time, but I got up just after 5:00 a.m. to run through the proofreading, and get it sent out, so we could go on our Thursday hike of Multnomah Falls. Dotti did a great job on the newsletter, as always, and it was just in time for Easter. Dotti and I hiked to the top of Multnomah Falls on Thursday, and the day was perfect for it. I put on my backpack and carried my good camera, and a tripod, along with a few other items, to the top, so we could get a couple of pictures of Dotti and I together. I also had something in the back of my mind about extending the tripod out over the falls to look down the flow better. The viewing platform is set back just a bit from the edge of the falls. You can see the water run to the edge, turn white, and then disappear, but you can't see it drop down the cliff face. The lower viewing platform, the lodge, and the parking lots are visible, but I wanted to know what else we could see if we could "lean out over the falls." We got on the road a bit earlier than we did two weeks ago, and left Starbucks about 10 a.m. (Hey, we needed a little something for the road. ) We stopped for gas, and then arrived at the Multnomah Falls parking lot at 10:45, about 40 minutes earlier than last time. However, we only arrived at the top of the falls 2 minutes earlier, but that was partly because we stopped at the trail summit (760 feet up from the parking lot) to take some pictures. We also have set it as our goal to walk only as fast as is comfortable, and not push it. That way we will continue to do this regularly, which is what is important!

Multnomah Falls was the number one attraction in the state of Oregon until the casinos moved into the state. It is still is extremely popular and so there was plenty of foot traffic on the path, because the day was sunny and cool. There were only a few times during our walk when we were out of sight of other people. Fortunately, a few minutes of that time was on the viewing platform at the top.

We saw on the weather forecast for Portland that the high temperature for the day was supposed to be 73°, so we didn’t wear coats. I brought along a long-sleeved shirt and Dotti wore a tee-shirt. As we got into the Columbia River Gorge, we noticed that the river had white caps. That can only mean one thing: wind! Also, at that time the temperature had suddenly dropped from 62°, down to 57° outside our car. Oh, oh.

When we arrived, it was as we feared. We were not attired for the temperature we found, especially in the wind. Fortunately, I had a wind breaker stuck away in the trunk of our car, and since Dotti is always warmer than I am, I gave her my shirt, and took the windbreaker for myself. Here is Dotti down near the Multnomah Falls Lodge, wearing my shirt. We made the right choice for who got which garment, because Dotti had the shirt off and tucked away in my backpack after the first switchback on the upper trail. I ended wearing the windbreaker all the way to the top.

This is the 760-foot summit of the trail. We always feel great when we reach it, because it is downhill from here in both directions for the trail. On one side it leads back down the way we came to the lodge, and on the other side (which is where we were actually standing in this picture) it leads down to Multnomah Falls Creek, which we would follow to the top of the falls. We spent some time at this location because we had a lot of people passing by while we were taking pictures, and we had to wait for them. But it was a great location for spending time. The scenery was beautiful and the weather was great. I took my windbreaker off for some pictures, but I put it back on quickly, because the wind was really chilling me where my shirt was a bit damp from sweat.

When we got down to the creek, instead of going straight to the falls, we turned to the left and went to very nice little area with a footbridge over the creek. This path leads to the top of Larch Mountain, and to the junction with the Wakenah Falls Loop trail. We are not yet up to tackling either of those hikes again yet. But later I am sure we will be doing both of them.

Here's Dotti in front of the creek and just to the side of the footbridge. She is so pretty in her Multnomah Falls tee-shirt (and her DWLZ hat :) ). We both wore matching shirts so we could take a picture at the top of the falls together with them on.

Dotti and I together. We were just to the left of where the last picture was taken, and the creek is really beautiful there. In order to get us and the creek in we had squat down a bit, but I think it came out pretty good.

When came over the hill and could see the upper viewing platform, I was a little disheartened by the crowd. There was a time when you could visit the falls on a weekday and find this platform empty for quite a bit of the time. Those days are gone. However, there are moments where it gets very crowded and then brief moments when the crowd leaves before the next one arrives. Although we had to fight for "rail space" occasionally during our stay on this platform, we did actually have the whole thing to ourselves briefly. :)

This is a picture that I have never been able to take before. I put my camera on the tripod, and then held it out over the falls pointing down. I used the self timer to give me a few seconds before it actually did the shutter release. We can the water fall a lot farther down than I have ever seen before from this location. The creek running from the upper falls over to the lower falls can be seen, and the popular bridge that crosses the creek at the lower falls, is fully visible for the first time from this point. It was fun trying something different. :D

This picture was taken two weeks ago, and this is all we normally can see from the platform.

Even when I held the camera up that day, and looked down over the falls, the view was limited. (But with Dotti's beautiful smile looking up at the camera, who cares? :) )

Well, here it is: Dotti and Al at the top of Multnomah Falls wearing our falls tee-shirts. :) The water in the background is actually going over the little "pre-falls" before the main drop, but they are pretty, and they usually make a good background for pictures.

On the way down I snapped this picture of the falls. This is a point along the trail that almost demands that you stop and take a picture.

When I turned around from taking the last picture, there was this wooden fence, which is a fairly new addition to the trail. If you look closely at the lower right hand part of the photo, there is something resting on the wooden rail.

It was this guy, out for a day of sun and fun at Multnomah Falls, just like us.

Here's Dotti hard at work getting a shot. She has her lens going, with her walking stick clinging to her arm by a thread, and her attention riveted on her intended subject. Dotti has really taken to photography and I really enjoy looking at the wonderful pictures she takes. (I am sure that she will be posting some later. :) )

I am sorry, but I couldn't make up my mind whether the overview of the falling water from the lower falls, or the slightly zoomed image, which better captures the churning aspect of the water's flight, should be the one included here. So, I put them both in.

This picture shows where I was standing to take those last two pictures. It was pretty crazy, because it was so crowed. You can see Dotti, who followed along behind a bit, because she had stopped to take some pictures up the trail a bit, as she is starting her run through the gantlet. You have to get past people who are not often quick to move out of your way, and at the same time, make sure that you don't step in front of one of the numerous cameras pointed this way and that. It can be quite a challenge getting across.

But Dotti made it safe and sound. :)

I included a couple of shot of the falls, because it was a great day for lighting and the falls are running a lot of water still. (In the late summer the water stream diminishes a great deal.)

Here are the numbers for the falls. The trail actually goes up above the falls, in order to clear a ridge that is in the way. So, while our tee-shirts say we climbed 620 feet to the top of the falls, that is as the water drops, not as the trail runs.

I am glad that we are starting to do some hiking again. I always feel much better when I am walking, and walking with Dotti is awesome!

5 years, 331 days on my journey; a lifetime to follow.
