Week 309 Update

It was about 40° and overcast this Spokane morning at 6:30 when I stepped up on Mr. Scale and he said, "206.0 pounds!"

I am still 6 pounds high, but I think I will be fine if I just keep doing what I have been doing the past couple of weeks. Doing my updates is really helpful to me, because it provides motivational focus. It keeps me on the ball with journaling so I will have accurate data to put in. The years I was successful in remaining where I wanted to be all included journaling and weekly updates. It only makes sense to go back to what you know works. (It is not a lesson that is easily learned.)

Dotti and I decided on the spur of the moment to come up to Spokane and lend some moral support at a difficult time. Tammy's mom is not doing well and we felt like we needed to be here. Tammy and Dotti are a lot like sisters, and they just seem to know when the other one needs some face to face time.

This week went by in a hurry. Saturday I did my update and a few other related things, and Easter Sunday I rewrote several section of my Visual Basic computer program that I use to input my journal data. Since I changed my journal format, the old program created HTML that had to be reformatted in a big way after it was created. So, I fixed it up. I also altered the approach to the way the code was created and so if I have big changes to make in the future they should be easier to implement. (I used the new program today for the first time for this journal entry.)

I have been trying to get the Coon Family Hiking Club pages set up a little nicer and I also have added the pictures for the three 2007 hikes. (I am still working on the write-ups.)

When I took my fall on the Multnomah Falls trail, I realized that I was in worse shape than I had originally estimated. My muscles were not up to being pushed to the point that I was used to pushing them on that walk and they failed me. I set it in my mind that I was going to have to change the way I was living in the exercise department if I was going to be as healthy as I want to be. So, I am working on getting more walking in. Dotti really has been helping in this endeavor as we have taken another Multnomah Falls hike and the Dawson Creek hike, and on Tuesday we walked 5 miles around our neighborhood to Wall-Mart, Starbucks and back home.

When we got close to Wall-Mart we noticed that they had finished a waterfall on the bank behind the store. I of course had to take a picture of my lovely wife standing in front of it. And Dotti took a picture of me as well. You can see the Wall-Mart name in red lights on the wall of the building behind us.

Just to show how badly we had been doing on our walking, this is how that waterfall looked the last time we came on this walk. (Unfortunately the light was fading when I took that shot and I tried doing a no-flash setting and I obviously did not hold the camera steady enough.) You can see that at that time the project was just getting well into construction and nowhere near being completed yet.

Another indication, of how long it has been since we did this walk, is this picture of a building that was under construction, and then how it looks now!

      =========>

They have done a lot of work since we were last by here. And finally, how long has it been? This picture shows Dotti standing in front of the decorations they had in front of Wall-Mart that day. Yep, it's been a while.

Still, I am very happy to see that we are getting back on track and I can already tell the difference in the way I feel. My stress level has gone down and I can work longer without having to take a break.

I can't say that the scale has been particularly cooperative this week. But then I have not been eating as low in points this week either. I have been averaging eating 44.79 points-per-day, and that is up near what used to be my maintenance level for 185 pounds (46 points), and I even went over that upper limit on two days. I have been eating a lot of popcorn, and with the higher activity level, I have taken ibuprofen to hold the joint and back pain in check. All together this has added up to some gains in weight.

However, I am very happy to report that I am journaling every day again, and that is one of my two major goals right now. (Actually if you include the walking, it makes 3 major goals.) I am writing everything down, and I am doing my weekly updates again. Hopefully I am on the right path to recovery, and to reaching goal once more.

Based upon some phone calls, Dotti and I made the decision after noon on Thursday to come up here to Spokane. We debated whether we should leave right away, or wait for Friday morning. We decided that leaving Friday morning would be better and so we spent the rest of the day getting things in order for the trip.

I got to bed late, after putting things together for the trip, and it was about midnight when I got to sleep. I woke up at 4:00 a.m. and my eyes were set on staying open. Dotti had been up all night working on getting things ready, and since we had packed the car the night before and pulled it into the garage, we didn't have too much left to do before getting on the road. Even so, we didn't get going much before 6:00 a.m.

I remembered a couple of things in my study that I needed to take with us, and that I had forgotten about the night before. After getting those things together, I brewed a pot of coffee, which I used to fill my thermos and my travel mug.

After a quick stop at Starbucks, so Dotti could get her caffine , we were on the road. I couldn't capture it on camera, but Mt. Hood looked about as beautiful as I have ever seen her. The sun was just below the horizon, and it was throwing red paint all over the clouds that were running high in the sky, like a ceiling over the mountain. Mt. Hood was covered with snow all the way down, like a lady with pure white hair hanging to her shoulders. The summit was lightly covered with what appeared to be a cloud cap, and the scene was repeated in the reflection in the Columbia River as we drove over the Glenn Jackson Bridge.

As we turned onto I-84 heading east into the Columbia River Gorge the light show continued as we were driving straight at Mt. Hood for a while, and the sunrise was absolutely stunning. Of course there was a price to be paid a bit later as we got deeper into the gorge and the sun cleared the Cascade Mountains surrounding us. All at once every spec of dust on our windshield exploded with illumination, blocking our view of the road, as the sunlight smashed full force into our eyes. Sunglasses on, and a quick windshield washer application, and all was much better!

One hundred miles later we could still see Mt. Hood behind us! She was sticking her head up over the lesser mountaintops and waving goodbye even after we had left the gorge and the mountains to the rear. It was a very clear day, a day built to properly appreciate our lovely mountain.

When we arrived at Jim and Tammy's house, Jim was still at work, and Tammy was about to leave for work. But we did get to say "Hi" to Tammy before she left. Jamie was there with our little grandson Hunter, and as you can see, Dotti was ready to slip him into our trunk so we could wisk him back home with us.

Alas, the plan was foiled as mother Jamie discovered the plot and said, "No you don't!"

In the meantime, LeRoy had dropped by, and he was enjoying the disagreement over Hunter's stowaway experience.

Later on Tammy, Dotti, Jim and I took Hunter to Cosco, and here Jim was holding the little guy in his lap as we were waiting for the ladies to get a Very Berry Sundae for each of us.

It is amazing how much little Hunter has grown since Thanskgiving! He is getting to be quite the little man.

Being on the road is always a challenge, and so we are going to have to be on our toes a bit. I am glad that I am journalling again, and I hope that will help.

5 years, 338 days on my journey; a lifetime to follow.
