WEEK 307
Week Ending March 31, 2007

Week Completed:___307___
Weigh-In Weight:208.5
Body Mass Index:26.0

When I stepped on the scale last week and saw 211.0 pounds, even though I knew I had sodium and ibuprofen to blame for a couple of the pounds, I knew I had to change what I was doing. I could rationalize and minimize the problem, but I am still me, and I have an eating problem. Period. I am not "well", and I will never be "well". I must control my eating, or it will eventually control me.

So, I set out to begin again. I pieced together the shambles that my online weight loss journal had become, and patched up the holes as best as I could. I did an update last week, and today I am doing another. I have made the commitment to myself that I will do two things from now on: I will journal what I eat every day, and I will do an update each week. This is where I will begin. I will rely on these two things to make everything else right in time. When I journal, I can know before I eat too much that I am about to do so. It may or may not stop me, but at least it will force me to make the choice. (Another side benefit is there are times when writing it down is inconvenient enough where I just won't eat something so I won't have to write it down.) When I am doing my journal each week, I want to report good news and progress. That is a source of motivation for me to make better choices throughout the week. So, I begin here. Today I am journaling. Today I am doing an update.

This week our son LeRoy came down for a visit, since it was spring break for college. On Sunday we visited OMSI, and Dotti's brother Rip met us there.

The weather outside was delightful, but the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry was calling our name. Inside the crowd was not too intense, and we had a great time! Off to the right in this picture, you can see the Planetarium sign. We did visit that exhibit, and saw Secrets of the Sun.

With the exception of the submarine, which we did not tour this time around, we covered much of the same ground (including the same planetarium show) that Jim and I covered back in September on the day before our cruise. Here we are looking a saber tooth tiger in the face. He fortunately looks a lot less fierce in his current state! Those long fangs of his were there so he could penetrate the very thick hide of the much larger animals of his time.

Dotti is always a source of energy in a group, and it was no exception here. She is ready to have fun and look for exciting things to see and talk about. We were standing in line waiting for the movie, but we were still having a great time.

While LeRoy and Rip were discussing the deeper implications of entropy in a closed physical system, I took the opportunity to snap their picture. Rip has his coffee in hand, just in case the movie wasn't going to be exciting enough to keep him awake.

Dotti turned the camera around on me just to show that I was in the group. It is funny looking through our many pictures over the years to see how few pictures of me are in our collection. I was the one pushing the shutter and so we have lots of pictures of Dotti and LeRoy, and Glenn too. However, every now and then I sneak into view. One of the things about Dotti doing more picture taking these days is that I am seeing myself appear more often.

Later, when we got outside, I took a picture of the ad for the movie we watched, and I have to say we were very disappointed in the movie. We were expecting a hurricane movie, and instead it was a political piece with very little actual hurricane footage. There was one incredible shot of hurricane Katrina from the top, where the eye was clearly visible and the entire storm was pretty much in view. There were a few minutes of wind footage and the rest of it was pretty much political sermonizing. Still, the company was awesome and we had a good time.

Before leaving the grounds, we took a couple of group pictures. LeRoy, Dotti and Rip were all smiling, and it showed the fun that we had been having. (It wasn't over yet, because Rip followed us home and we had a chance to visit with him for dinner. )

Here are the three guys of the group. Rip is still holding onto his coffee cup. LeRoy, who is nearly the same height as I am is bending his knees to look shorter. We were all getting set for a really great dinner that Dotti made for us. She always pretends that she can't cook, but she always does a great job when she sets her mind to it!

Monday and Tuesday LeRoy helped us take a lot of heavy boxes to Goodwill, as we were doing some spring cleaning. (Thank you LeRoy!)

LeRoy had some business he had to take care of in Spokane, and so he headed back home on Wednesday. We were sad to see him go!

Dotti and I did a walk on Thursday. Dotti wasn't feeling up to doing Multnomah Falls again yet, and so we walked a couple of miles in Dawson Creek Park, where I used to do so much walking in the past. We started in the Costco parking lot and then walked around the park. If you would like to see some pictures or our walk, CLICK HERE.

Starting on Saturday, my weight for each day was: 211.0, 209.0, 206.0, 205.5, 206.5, 208.5, and 205.5. It moved back up to 208.5 this morning. (I think the popcorn I had last night helped to move it back up.) I didn't journal and so I don't know how many points I ate each day, but I know that I was not way out of line. Still, the only way you can know for sure is to count everything. Starting today, that is what I will be doing.

My hope is that next week I will have some better numbers to show for my efforts. Most of all, I want to be able to report that I have met my commitment to journaling, on paper each day, and online, once a week.
