THE ‘CAN OPENER’
Your Key to Success
    By Al Coon

Al
Expert Opinion

I received an email this past week from someone who works in the weight loss field. I found one statement she made to be very troubling, because it goes to the heart of the problem of weight loss and weight maintenance. She suggested that losing weight and keeping it off is an unreasonable goal in the face of life's challenges. If this is what our experts feel, what hope have the rest of us? While I am sure that many hold this lady's opinion, I would like to challenge that with a few thoughts about babies.

Babies, the Perfect Examples

Did you know that a baby can't walk? None of them are born with the ability to stand on their legs and walk across their playpens, let alone across the room. And running? No way: it can't be done!

But just watch that little guy over there. He doesn't even consider failure, not for a moment. He takes a step on wobbly legs, after having already invested a lot of time and energy into just standing up while holding onto the sofa, and he promptly falls to the floor.

Then what?

Why the little fellow grabs onto the sofa once more, drags himself up with great effort, and tumbles again with his next try. He might even bang his head when he has his fall, and after a good cry, he goes right back to it. He never gives up; he keeps on trying until he can take a step and hold his feet. And then he takes another, after many more falls in between. Finally he reaches the point where we have to tell him to sit down because he is running around making too much noise.

Here is another point to consider about babies; babies can't talk. Not a single baby is born with the ability to talk. While they are not silent—as any mother knows who is awakened from a sound sleep for feeding time—it remains a fact that no baby is born with the ability to communicate in what will one day be his native tongue.

Baby starts off cooing and giggling and making other noises, which carry nothing that would qualify as language. And then he starts to approximate actual words. It is fun to watch moms translate these attempts at speech. Many times these cute verbal mistakes are remembered years later with great fondness.

And think of this: Imagine how much easier it would be to master the skills we need to make our journey a success, if only we could be that understanding of our own failed attempts while we are learning the ropes!

Later on Baby starts to say actual words, and then the art of grammar has to be mastered. He creates a sentence and is corrected. He tries again, and over time he learns correct use of his language, and it finally has become his own. For the rest of his life, his native tongue will always be his, with a beautiful musical sound to his ear.

Babies are born unable to do many things, but they learn, and it is not only because it is easy for them to learn, but because they never even consider giving up.

Success Comes in Cans!

A dear friend of ours, Carole (Burtrude/Oregoncard on the message board) has had the following line of wisdom in her signature for a long time:

Success comes in CANS! Failure in CAN'Ts!

No one has ever succeeded at anything significant by believing that it couldn't be done.

The very first step towards success is to believe that trying makes sense:
  • The task can be accomplished.
  • The reward can be earned.
  • The goal can be reached.
  • It CAN be done.
It is NOT unrealistic to believe that our journey CAN be done. In fact it is a necessary component of success to believe it can be done.

Defeatist talk and thinking lead to failure, even when success could have been had without their interference. And remember: babies invest zero time in negative thinking; they just keep trying until they succeed.

You Don't Have to be a Genius

We do not need to look to the brilliant men of the past like Thomas Edison, who failed hundreds of times before he finally found a light bulb configuration that led to illuminating our world. We don't have to hunt down examples like the quintessential genius Sir Isaac Newton, whose brilliant mind gave us the mathematical tools for our rockets to travel our solar system and to accurately predict where our planet will be a million years from now in the galaxy, and who simply created calculus along the way when the mathematical tools of the time were insufficient to the task. These are very interesting examples, but how many of us find that we have a lot in common with Edison or Newton?

Instead, a far better example of success is the baby, because that is part of your own personal history. You can relate to babies, because you were one.
  • You learned to walk.
  • You learned to talk.
  • You demonstrated the unbending will to succeed and the refusal to even consider the idea that "it can't be done."
You have already demonstrated that you have it in you; you have used that ability repeatedly in the past as you learned to do so many things that you were born unable to do.

It is Just the Same!

You may be telling yourself that weight loss and maintenance are completely different things than learning to walk and talk. But that would be just fooling yourself.

Weight loss isn't about will power any more than learning to walk was. The only will power you needed to learn to walk was that required to keep trying until it worked.

It is not will power that has to be developed in order to move from not being able to walk to being able to run around the room. The baby has to toughen up his little leg muscles so that they can hold up his body, and he has to learn how to take a step without falling.

In the same vein, when we are striving for weight loss and weight maintenance, there is a developmental component and a learned technique component.

We need to toughen up our daily routines to include good healthy habits. We have to learn to eat plenty of the right foods. We have to learn to get the right amount of exercise.

Most of all we need to reach back to our past attitude:
  • Never think of falling down as failure.
  • Once fallen, the only move is to get up and try again.
  • A faulty step is just and opportunity to learn another thing that won't work.
  • Get back up on those wobbly legs and take another step!
Remember that your power will grow, and your technique will improve with practice, no matter how it looks at first. No one could say that a baby learning to walk is a study in grace and form. It is a collection of chaotic movements, riddled with failed attempts. So don't worry about grace and form, just keep trying.

The Key is to believe that you CAN do it and to keep trying.
  • Take each step with optimism.
  • Take each fall with the same resolve you had as a child: to get right back up immediately for another go.
  • Hold onto any support you need until your legs are strong enough to go it on your own.

Break out your "can opener" and dish yourself up a healthy helping of success!

Wishing you the very best,

-Al

Caffeine

Most of caffeine that you consume is in your beverages but caffeine is also in some foods. America consumes half  the world coffee crop , averaging about 450 cups a year per person!  Guess what?  We also drink about 450 cups of soda per person every year.  So, now that we know we drink a lot of coffee and soda, what do we really know about caffeine?

Within a half hour of consuming caffeine it is absorbed into your blood system affecting your brain, heart rate, respiration, muscle coordination and central nervous system almost immediately.  Caffeine stays in your body up to 4 hours.  If you are a coffee drinker more than likely you take longer to fall asleep and when you do you don't sleep well.  You also wake up less refreshed than those who don't drink coffee.

Below is a list of food and beverages where caffeine can be found.

Food/beverage and amount of caffeine per mg.
  • Coffee, 10 oz [120-270 mg]
  • Instant Coffee, 10 oz [60-240 mg]
  • Decaffeinated Coffee, 10 oz [2-10 mg]
  • Brewed Tea, 5 oz [20-110 mg]
  • Iced Tea, 12 oz [65-80 mg]
  • Green Tea, 5 oz [12-60 mg]
  • Instant tea, 5 oz [25-50 mg]
  • Semi-sweet Chocolate, 1 oz [5-35 mg]
  • Hot Cocoa, 8 oz [2-20 mg]
  • Chocolate Milk, 8 oz [2-8 mg]
  • Mountain Dew, 12 oz [55 mg]
  • Coca Cola Classic or Diet Coke, 12 oz [47 mg]
  • Shasta Cherry Cola, 12 oz [45 mg]
  • Dr. Pepper, 12 oz [40 mg]
  • Pepsi Cola, 12 oz [39 mg]
  • Diet Pepsi, 12 oz [37 mg]

Bloated? Gassy?  Here's Some Relief

I bet most of us have had that bloated, gassy feeling at some time or another on this Journey.  It's not a pleasant experience. Below are some suggestions to help relieve that bloated and gassy feeling.

1.  Avoid foods that are salty. Eating salty foods cause you to retain water, resulting in bloating and puffiness.

2.  Try to cut down your portions of gas-promoting foods such as beans (high in fiber).  Beano can be added to these foods.  Beano is an enzyme that helps digest gas-causing sugars.

3. Increase the amount of vitamin E you are getting.  Lack of vitamin E causes fluid retention, cramps and breast tenderness.  There are several ways you can increase your vitamin E - take a 400 IU supplement or adding in some extra-virgin olive oil, nuts, seeds, brown rice or legumes.

4.  A lack of protein can cause fluid retention so make sure you have some fish, tofu, chicken or lean meat each day.

5.  Acidophilus can help with gassiness.  All-Natural yogurt made with active cultures is one way to get some acidophilus or you can take an acidophilus supplement daily.

6.  Fresh pineapple contains an enzyme that helps with gas and sooths the stomach.

7.  Fresh papaya and mint contains enzymes that aid digestion.  Why not try a papaya and mint salad.

8.  To help settle your stomach, decrease gas and aid in digestion anise seeds or fennel seeds can help.  Add some to your food or chew on a teaspoonful after eating.

9.  Drink ginger or chamomile tea. Both are age-old remedies which are known to help calm the stomach.

10. Dairy products can leave you feeling gassy.  If that happens, you may be sensitive to dairy, or lactose-intolerant.  Lactaid is an over-the-counter lactose digestion aid which might help.  Try lactaid with your milk.

The Hypnosis Network is continuing to offer Dr. Roberta's Enjoying Weight Loss Hypnosis CDs for $97. If you are interested in learning more about Dr. Roberta's Enjoying Weight Loss Hypnosis CDs you can read our review at http://www.dwlz.com/hypnosisreview.html. I would not recommend them if they hadn't of worked for me.

Here is what the Hypnosis Network says:

Dr. Roberta's Enjoying Weight Loss was tested and recommended by the National Health & Wellness Club.

In the National Health & Wellness Club's Product Test Program, club members conduct their own independent tests of health and wellness products. The fifty independent testers who tried Enjoying Weight Loss gave the program a 92% approval rating.

3 Easy Payments!

The folks at Hypnosis Network have been receiving a lot of positive feedback about their new program of accepting 3 equal payments for these CDs. They rightly feel that your decision should be whether or not the product is right for you, and not about whether you can afford it.

Thank you to all of you who continue to be there for me and support me in my Journey to becoming a healthier me. Thank you for caring!

Wild Mushroom Soup

Makes 8 servings
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 large Spanish onion (yellow)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 12 oz white mushrooms
  • 8 oz shitake mushrooms (and/or other mushrooms such as oyster or maitake)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp dried basil
  • 6 cups water
Peel the garlic and onion.  Chop the garlic roughly and cut the onion into 1/8" to 1/4" pieces. In a 6-8 quart pot, over medium heat, warm the oil.  Add the garlic and onion and cook until the onion is soft, about 10 minutes.  Add water, 1 tbsp at a time, as necessary to prevent burning.

Wash and slice the mushrooms.  Add to the pot and cook over medium heat for 20 minutes, or until the mushrooms are golden brown.  Add the salt, bay leaf, oregano, basil and water.  Simmer over low heat for 25 minutes.

Remove and discard the bay leaf.  Puree half of the soup in a blender or food processor (use chopping blade) until the mixture is medium-thick.  Return to the pot.  Serve hot or warm.

You can add a 14 oz can of evaporated skim milk at the end of the recipe if you want a creamy version of this soup.

You can of course still get the software version (which continues to work very well, even on my Windows Vista computer), but the online version of Weight Commander is a wonderful new option! Halfsies

You feel terrible when you eliminate certain types of food "cold turkey".  What do you do then?  You eat even more of the stuff you are trying to eliminate.  Why not try eliminating those foods by "diluting" them by blending them with lighter versions and then weaning off them gradually.  Here are a few ideas:

Lighten ground red meat by blending it with ground turkey, low-fat vegetarian meat substitute, bread shreds, cracker crumbs.

Lighten ketchup by blending it with salsa.

Lighten sugar by blending it with low or no-calorie sweetener.

Lighten salt by blending it with light salt, then salt substitute.

Lighten cream by blending it with half and half, then milk, then reduced-fat milk; or fat-free non-dairy creamer.

Lighten coffee or tea by blending it with decaffeinated coffee or tea.

Lighten stick butter or margarine by blending it with light margarine, then light margarine in tubs (it's even lighter).

The Swimming Suit

There are moments in every woman's life
When she faces the humiliating fact
That time is no longer on her side
As she performs the simple, yearly,
Humiliating, death-defying act of...

Buying a swimming suit.
I can't believe I'm here
Buying a swimming suit.
I can't believe I'm here
Buying a swimming suit.
I do this every year,
Putting myself through
Eight kinds of hell
Searching through spandex
And nylon fortrel for a...

Flattering swimming suit.
Oxymoron...
A flattering swimming suit.
I feel like a moron.
Take a deep breath...
A prozac...a pause...
And try to remember
The Swimming Suit Laws.

Rule number one...
No stripe or horizontal
Unless you weigh thirty-five pounds.
Rule number two...
Accentuate the good parts.
Make them look up...
Never look down.

Buying a swimming suit.
There are questions when
Buying a swimming suit.
Here's one suggestion.
When thinking of ways
To improve the bra size,
Remember that foam
Is the last thing that dries.

Rule number three...
Keep them distracted
With ruffles and sequins and belts.
Rule number four...
Don't squeeze the job.
If you pull it in here
It comes out somewhere else.

And the lady who helps you is seventy-five
With glasses and rolled-down hose.
She says, "Dahling, this one is so good for the thighs".
I look better naked than I do in those.

Still...I'm buying a swimming suit.
How I hate this!
I'm buying a swimming suit.
I can't...wait!
Here's a nice little speedo.
Maybe I'll take this one after all,
or maybe...
I'll just stay inside...
till fall!

Could I see something in a wet suit, please?

Did you know...?

Our Journey is not just about weight loss; it's about constantly learning new things... I'll bet you did not know there was a reason for 10, 2, and 4 on the Dr. Pepper bottle. Below are a few interesting facts about my favorite soft drink (diet, of course).

What's with the 10, 2, and 4. Ever notice those random numbers on the Dr. Pepper bottle?  They're not so random after all... Dr. Pepper claims that research shows people's energy levels drop between meals at 10 am, 2 pm and 4 pm. What better way to restore energy, they say, than to drink their pepper-upper at those times?  To keep the competition at bay, the company registered the "10, 2 and 4" as part of their trademark.

That's the end of it - Period.  In 1950, the company that eventually owned the Dr. Pepper brand dropped the period after Dr., to improve legibility on their bottles at that time. Today the trademark is registered as Dr Pepper without the period.

Many people think I have a staff, but for most things it's just me. Thanks for understanding.

Aladdin's Eatery will be back up with nutritionals in the next day or so.
