Week 342 Update

It was early, 3:30 a.m. when I woke up Mr. Scale so that he could say, "199.5 pounds!"

I did better on my points this week, eating on average 35.43 per day, compared with 46.93 per day last week. So, naturally my weekly weigh-in weight went up a half pound, and my average weight went 198.29 to 199.36. I think there was some residual weight adjustment going on from Thanksgiving week, because eating under 36 points-per-day on average will normally produce a loss. So, I won't worry about that too much.

When you look at the Weight Commander prediction for the next few weeks, it has me climbing up over 206 pounds by Valentine's Day. While I am perfectly capable of doing that, as I demonstrated earlier this year, I am hopeful, even confident that will not be the case this time. The Weight Commander was designed primarily as a weight loss tool, rather than a weight maintenance tool, and so it assumes you are seeking to change your weight rather than holding it steady. So, while I like to try and keep the future graph aimed in my target zone, so far I have found that hard to do. It shows me as either climbing up too high, or falling down too low. But that is because small variations today are projected out and magnified over time. So, as long as my actual weight is in my target range, I don't worry too much about the prediction side of things.

On the Control Panel graph, I had one daily weigh-in that jumped up out of my target range, but it fell right back into my target range again after that. The solid squares, which are the running average, are all within my target range for the month of November, and that means that I maintained where I want to be right through Thanksgiving and the other hurdles that came along last month. With Christmas coming on fast, I have one more month of challenge to try and hold the course and remain in my target range.

I drew in the lines for the top and bottom of my target range, and added a little color to make things easier to see. Over the month of November I had 3 daily weigh-ins that moved up too high. Two of them were at 201, or one pound over my limit; and one was only a half-pound high. Also, I think it is good that two of the three high numbers were in the first half of the month, and not related to the heavy challenges of Thanksgiving Day. (The one in the second half was on the Monday following Thanksgiving.) All my other daily weigh-ins and all of my weekly weigh-ins (light blue squares) came in inside my target range.

It also is clear that I have been holding very steady in the top 2.5 pounds of my target range. Besides the 3 excursions above the upper limit, I only had one daily weigh-in that fell into the lower half of target range for the entire month. At this point, that is merely interesting. I am perfectly happy to be in any part of my target range, and will endeavor to remain there if at all possible.

I checked my points consumption against my running 7 day average for points, and I found that starting on Saturday and going through Friday it was

  • +3.21 Saturday
  • -12.0 Sunday
  • -9.29 Monday
  • -9.79 Tuesday
  • -9.71 Wednesday
  • -6.64 Thursday
  • -1.93 Friday
During that stretch the running average itself dropped from 46.93 down to 35.43. So, it got harder to get under it as the week progressed, but after the first day I managed to each day. What is interesting is that I could eat 51.5 points on Saturday and only be 3.21 points over my running average. I had definitely eaten a lot of food the week before. But this week, beginning with Sunday, I ate in the 30s each day, and by Thursday that pulled my 7 day average down into the 30s as well.

I feel like I am on the right track to hold steady in my target range with what I am doing right now.

For exercise this week I didn't do as much as two weeks ago, but I did better than last week. I feel like I did pretty well if I get in 10 miles of walking. More is better, but 10 is okay.

Monday Dotti and I walked to Red Robin for a meal and then visited Borders where we did some reading before walking home, giving us 2.2 miles of walking for the day. On Tuesday we walked to Wall-Mart 2.5 miles from home, and then, while Dotti did some shopping, I walked back home and picked up the car, giving me 5.0 miles of walking. Then on Wednesday we did the Red Robin and Borders circuit once more, for another 2.2 miles. Friday we walked around a large craft fair housed in two connected buildings totally 180,000 square feet. (One was 360'x300' and the other was 300'x240'.) We walked up and down many rows in both buildings and walked some back and forth in addition to that. We covered at least a mile, and when you include the extra runs for visiting the bathroom and walking in from the huge parking lot, we probably were closer to 2 miles. But I am only counting one of them. We were on our feet for 4.5 hours or more while walking through all of the displays and that was good exercise too; even when we were not walking we were standing, and shifting our position as we looked through the wares on display. It wasn't a hard game of racquetball, but I was tired at the end of the session.

Saturday we drove home from Spokane, and hurried up to get the newsletter out. After getting it mostly done on Sunday, it was finally complete on Monday and was sent out. After trying to get all caught up for a couple of days, on Thursday we drove down to my mom's house and picked her up and drove back home the same day. That was over 8 hours of actual driving (since we hit rush hour on the way home it was actually over 9 hours of driving) and then we had some additional time getting the car packed and making a couple of stops on the way out of town before heading back home. I was very tired by the end of that day! And we followed that up with the craft fair the next day, so this morning I am still feeling pretty beat.

Well, we hope to have fun month with Mom visiting with us. We have a few things planned already and I am sure that we'll come up with some more ideas as we go along.

I will close with this picture I took of Mom yesterday at the craft fair:
