Week 324 Update

It was 3:15 a.m. when I stepped up on Mr. Scale and he said, "198.0 pounds!"

Well, I certainly can't complain about this week's weigh-in, or for any of my daily weigh-ins this week; I never left One-derland at all. I only averaged eating 25.57 points-per-day for the week, and my weight averaged 197.36. Since my target weight is 197.5, that puts me right on track in that department for this week.

It would have been a great week if that were all that were going on. But, alas, there was more, and this other was where my focus was this week.

As a brief aside, today, when women wish to become pregnant and are having difficulty, they see a medical specialists, but in Ireland in the old times, before Christianity took over, this weekend (the final Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in this month) the ladies would climb up to the top of Croagh Patrick Mountain to "sleep in the bed" of Aine, the presiding goddess of Ireland, and Crom Drubh, the pre-celtic harvest god, and ask for a blessing of children. Then, the next day, when they came down from the mountain, they had a wild celebration where they got started on making their wishes come true. Today, the weekend is celebrated in the name of St. Patrick as Garland Sunday, and has a more subdued set of activities associated with it. Still, like with Christmas, Easter, and Halloween, I find it interesting to see the roots of where the holiday comes from.

Week 324 began on Saturday July 21, and with us taking Vikki to the airport to fly home to Calgary. Our fun visit was over and the time had come to head back into our normal routine. Or was it?

The first order of business was to get the newsletter out. I worked on the lead article and Dotti took care of the rest of the Dotti's Newsletter and by Sunday, just before noon, we had it ready to ship.

A few thoughts on Harry Potter...

The last Harry Potter book came out on Saturday, and I had finished reading it on Monday. While not as bloody as the Lord of the Rings, the Harry Potter series was no happy childhood story either. The books were entertaining, but they do not stand with the great books like The Chronicals of Narnia. Even the Lord of the Rings, despite the violence, had a lot to teach on things like honor, truth, and people.

The Harry Potter series was written for today's unfortunate market demands, and it is in complete resonance with those demands, and that is why the books have been so incomparably successful.

What is the difference between great writing and best-selling writing? It depends on who you ask. Some writing experts place sales above anything else in judging how good any writing is. Others demand longevity for the work before it can be called great. Still others insist that a great moral must be conveyed, especially in children's books, that will cause the reader to aspire to be a better person than he would have been otherwise. I fall in line with the latter group, and feel that that the Narnia series, which has many of the same magical elements of the Harry Potter books, does qualify as great writing (and I would recommend it to young readers), but the Harry Potter books do not.

That is not to say they don't have interesting characters (who could read about Professor Dolores Umbridge and not have his skin crawl with loathing?), tell a compelling story (7 books leading up to that final duel between "He who must not be named" and "The boy who lived"), nor that they do not flow, and have well orchestrated plots. Sadly, despite containing these important elements of fiction, in my opinion, they tend to suggest that the end justifies the means, and that laws are meant to be broken at will. They do little to build up the structure of society, and aid in the reverse. There are other sinister messages contained there which I do not feel will strengthen the character of children at all. While they are still better than watching television, that is a depressingly low standard by which to judge the written word.

Monday, I began a three-day consecutive string of weighing 197.0 pounds in the morning. (Sunday I weighed 197.5, and so I just barely missed a four day string.) We had a lot of things to get done on Monday and Tuesday before the big event.

On Tuesday the jitters finally set in for me and started having trouble concentrating on other things. I was facing a major event, and I didn't know what to expect. I have written up a description of what happened, called, "The Tooth Fairy's Evil Twin." Click on the name to read all about it.

While the process of getting dentures overwhelmed everything else in my mind, I still had a few other things to keep track of. My eating was thrown all out of whack for the week. Tuesday I ate 31.0 points, but I was still on a fairly soft diet from the tooth extraction from the week before. Cereal and milk filled in and Dotti and I made a run to Costco on Tuesday to see if I could find a computer to replace the one I have been using for a couple of years. It was running slow, and was developing some quirks that were unacceptable. Since I use it every day for my work, I needed it work better than it was working. At the same time, I absolutely hate to change computers, even for a better one. I normally will nurse my old one along well beyond the point it should be replaced. We found a Gateway that I thought would do the trick, and hopefully will last me at least another 2 years, if not longer. I don’t play any of the serious computer games that would require a power graphics card, Spider Solitaire or Free Cell are usually the extent of gaming. On occasion I will run Chessmaster or Snood, but I don’t really have a computer for games. So, my needs are small compared with those of the gamers, or those involved with other graphic intensive activities.

Anyway, Dotti and I had a Very Berry Sundae, and we brought home a new computer for me. I didn’t have the energy to even get it out of the box on Tuesday, and after my ordeal on Wednesday, I was in no shape at all to even think about computers. I had taken all of my personal files on my old computer and copied them over to an external hard drive. So, the transfer over would be simpler than it would have been otherwise. Still, I was incapacitated. The main box remained in the garage, but the smaller boxes were on the floor in my study, going nowhere.

Wednesday, I weighed 197.0 pounds, and I had a large bowl of cereal and milk, along with a cup of coffee, before heading in to the dentist’s office for my ordeal. That added up to 8.5 points, but by day’s end I had only eaten 3 more points.

I did take some Ibuprofen, and so my weight jumped up 2.0 pounds on Thursday. I was feeling bad still, and so, I only pulled a couple of things out of the box for my new computer. I was not in any mood for anything more.

With my teeth in place, I was able to eat 10.0 points for lunch, including some hot food, like potatoes and spinach. For the day I still only ate 20.0 points.

Friday, after weighing only 196.0 pounds, I just went for soft food and didn’t fight with my teeth. I also finally got the rest of my computer out of the box and connected everything, and started transferring files. I had almost everything moved over and it was looking about ready to start running when I found that my DVD drive was no longer visible to Windows. Something had eaten the driver for it. Wonderful. I was just barely hanging in there anyway, and this really set me back. I tried a few restore points and finally managed to get the drive back, and only had to reinstall a few things. But I really didn’t need any more troubling events this week. Now, nearly everything is in place, and I will be removing my old computer from my study soon. But I am still in no rush.

I did manage to eat 32.5 points on Friday, and I am perfectly happy with my weigh-in today at 198.0 pounds.

My hope is that I can get my life back this upcoming week, at least a bit, and be able to focus on other things beside my teeth for a change. I have a lot to do, and this has put me down hard for several days. Here’s to a better week next week!

6 years, 78 days on my journey; a lifetime to follow.
