Port Call: Ketchikan!

September 22, 2006

Here I am in our stateroom, all ready for our formal night dinner: black shoes; black pants; black shirt; black coat; and a tie that was mostly black, with some red and white mixed in, just for some variety.

Next door, Jim and Tammy were also all dressed up and ready to go, and they had gotten the memo on wearing black for the dinner.

"What do you mean that the Huskies are not better than the Cougars? You take that back!"

I was trying something different with the camera, by shooting into the mirror on the wall. I didn't want a flash to bounce back at us from the mirror, and so I used the natural lighting setting. That put a warm coloration to the picture, and it was difficult to hold it completely steady for the time the shutter was open, causing a bit of a blur.

Best friends posing for the camera bug. (That would be Dotti in this case.)

It looks like Jim's got some ideas about what he wants to drink with his dinner.

We are seated at our table (wasn't that a quick trip?) and our waiter is taking Tammy's order.

Our dinner companions; don't they make a handsome couple?

My lovely and wonderful wife. Dotti was ready to have a nice dinner, and dinner is always nice when she is there to share it with me.

Dotti didn't get the memo that said we were supposed to wear black for the formal dinner, but that is okay, because she looks beautiful in the green outfit, and it DOES have some black in it.

I sure am seeing more gray and wrinkles these days. Why do you suppose that is? I just can't figure it out.

"You told her what???" Just kidding Jim, she doesn't know a thing.

Tammy, looking lovely in her formal attire, is waiting for our meal to arrive.

Is it 1912 again? Fortunately no, and fortunately this is not April 15, and we were not cruising the north Atlantic unsuccessfully dodging icebergs. But we are on a cruise ship, and we did see glacier ice this trip, so the sepia image is not too out of place. I did a "natural lighting" picture, and there is some blurring, but it helped show the tables behind us, and how the dining room curved around towards the stern of the ship.

Here I am the luckiest guy on the ship with my lovely Dotti. Isn't she beautiful?

The waiter is taking a dish from the table behind me just as this picture was snapped. I really enjoyed our evening meals together. It was a great time to sit and relax and to enjoy each other's company. The pictures we took during our meals captured happy moments that will be remembered for many years to come.

Dotti has been having a great cruise, and it shows in her smiling face. She has been pampered in the spa, and walked the streets of Alaskan cities. She saw glaciers and even a seal catching fish from Creek Street. And she made my time on the cruise absolutely wonderful. Thank you Dotti!

Here's Jim posing for our "official" picture from the wandering photographer. He said, "Okay, I'll smile if I gotta."

These two people are very special to Dotti and I, and am so glad that we were able to all take this cruise together! The fun we had will be treasured for the rest of our lives. Thirty years of marriage has been good to them, and they look very happy, as they should.

The beautiful Tammy was looking awesome for her "official" picture. The formal evenings in the Vista Dining Room really brought out the best.

Jim looks like he is up to something, and he probably was. He has pretty well cleaned his plate and looks like he might be ready for dessert.

I caught Dotti when she wasn't expecting a picture to be taken, and she looks wonderful, as her eyes are twinkling. She looks like she is about to say something about what Jim is doing on the other side of the table.

Jim's shenanigans didn't only get us at our table laughing but also two others were chuckling as well. Let me introduce Bob and Judy, a couple who not only sat near us for dinner, but who also joined us for lunch on one occasion. In addition we were happy they chose to sit right next to us during Leo Ward's performance, where Bob was asked to test one of the metal binders that the illusionist would be using for one of his illusions. (Dotti had some fun there too. ) They are a handsome couple, as well as being nice people, and we truly enjoyed making their acquaintance. Maybe one day we'll meet them on another cruise. I hope so!

The bread was fresh and tasty, and I had to take this picture quickly before it was all gone.

I took this picture looking backwards over my shoulder. This night they had the staff walk around the dining room for us to sort of say goodbye. The next evening we would be in Victoria, and this might be the last chance to get us all together. The aisles were filled with waiters, and cooks, and all those who had made our eating experience so great on this cruise.

Is he good or what? I suppose they had the tops joined together securely, but it looked impressive anyway.

We were on the lower level and there was a spiral stairway that the staff used to go back and forth between decks. Here the cooks were marching down the stairs in procession.

I took this picture specifically because Dotti and I had visited with this chef one morning in the Lido Restaurant, while we waited for my waffles to cook in his machine. According to his name tag, his name is William McGrath and he is a "2ND Executive Chef." He said he is from Edmondton, Alberta in Canada and he seemed like a really nice guy. After dinner, Jim and Tammy went to watch the show, and Dotti and I walked around the ship, and we stopped at the Internet Café to check on how DWLZ was doing, and on our email. Things were going well fortunately. When I checked on the weather report I was hit like a ton of bricks by the temperature they were predicting for our return to Vancouver on Sunday: 85°! We had been living in a pleasant little world of temperatures in the 40's or at the most in the 50's. Were there really ugly temperatures like 85° out there still? Apparently so. At least we had one more day of nice northern ocean temperatures.

We are back in our stateroom, and Dotti is checking what the Daily Program has to say about our next port of call: Victoria, BC! It has been a long day, and it is time for bed, even though Dotti still looks as fresh as a daisy.

On the bed was this cute little guy. Ruff!

The sticker on his nose said, "Valencia, California #3108," along with some other things that I can't make out. The sticker made a good nose for him.

From this angle he looks proud, holding his head up high and appearing to lift his right foreleg. We were going to miss having the little animals to come home to each night after the cruise was over. It had to have been a lot of work for someone, and it was appreciated!
