FIRST INTERLUDE
She studied the enemy. Not a muscle moved on either side. Her enemy didn’t stoop to physical attacks, but used mental control. She shuddered under its power. She felt her will weakening and like a man holding onto a rail over a fatal drop, she felt her grip slipping. She was going to fall.
Chapter 1
The Portland rain spattered against the windshield and the wipers needed changing. Patches of untouched glass made it hard to see clearly. An impatient driver honked as Crystal ignored the green light, but the sound seemed far away.
She could still smell the office, that clinical chemical aroma that she hated so much. The shock that she received from the doctor only added to the trapped feeling she had while she was there. It reminded her of how her cat Snowball must have felt when Crystal was a little girl, and Dad had put her pet into a box, so they could take her to the vet. Snowball moaned from deep inside, and it sounded so pitiful. The claws scratching at the box were like someone trying to dig out of a coffin. As upset as Crystal still felt, it was a great relief to be out of that office.
