Al has written our article for this edition of my newsletter.  I love the way he writes and hope you will agree as you read his article.

I've had a good month on Program, and have lost 40 lbs total since I started back to Goal in September 2013.  I have been exercising, and I feel so much better! I am especially loving shopping in my own closet!

Continuing Celebration of Success

You may recall that in the January edition of Dotti's Newsletter, Dotti discussed celebrating your successes, and your New Year's Intentions. Well, here we are in March, spring is upon us, and January's winter is moving into the past. And I have been watching Dotti practice just what she preaches, since before fall began! September, October, November, December, January, February, and most of March have now gone by and day after day, Dotti moves closer and closer to her goal.

People tend to focus on the scale as the big deal in a Weight Loss Journey. But there are more important things. You see, weight loss is a result, not an action; it is an effect, not a cause. It is like the light in the room on a dark night, where you sit in glorious illumination while the world outside is in the dark. Light is an effect, not a cause. Electricity is a cause, and a lightbulb is a cause, but neither is a complete cause, but combined they produce light for you. The light is a result of applying electricity to the lightbulb.

We tend to take the light for granted, but it is truly remarkable, if you think about it, because not all that long ago, electrically produced light did not exist, other than when lightening flashed across the sky.

But when you have light, it can then become a cause for other things. Sight is enabled by light. Your solar powered calculator will work because of it. If you use the right bulbs, plants can use electric light to perform photosynthesis and grow.

So it is with weight loss. Once you have it, it can cause other things. It can help you to be more active, because moving a light body around is far easier than moving a heavy one. Your joints will take less strain and will hurt less, and the damage you do to them each day will be decreased. Your risk of diabetes will drop significantly, and even if you have acquired diabetes, you may find that it goes away when you have weight loss down to a healthy weight. Your appearance will be enhanced and your clothes will look better on you. Many good things can be caused by weight loss, but first you have to possess it, and you can't just DO weight loss. You can't just buy weight loss. Weight loss happens as an indirect result of things that you can do, and you actually do.

This is why the scale is not the big deal in a Weight Loss Journey that it often is thought to be. The scale measures an effect, not a cause, and that can confuse the entire process in our minds. The scale can lie to us! If you take a medication, or consume sodium, which causes your body to retain water, the scale shows your weight as being higher. As it turns out, you do weigh more. You are carrying more mass, and the earth's gravitation pull is therefore greater on you (which is what the scale actually measures), and you will rightly show a higher number on the scale. However, that is not important (unless you have a dangerous amount of fluid in your system), it is not even relevant! It is a number with no meaning for your Weight Loss Journey, because you are trying to lose fat, not make the scale read some particular number.

So, what does really matter to your Weight Loss Journey, if it is not the scale? The only thing that really matters is what you do. Things you can do are in your control. Things that you can do, can be measured, documented, and CELEBRATED!

What really matters?

  1. What you eat matters a great deal. This is something you do, and it something you control.

    • Eating good food will help your body to have all the things it needs to keep you running right. Your body has nutritional needs, and you have to meet them if you are going to be healthy!

    • Eating the right amount of food is very important. If you eat fewer calories than you burn each day, it will cause you to lose weight. At the same time, you don't want to eat too few calories each day, because your body doesn't want to die, and if you cut your calories down too far, your body will drop your metabolism down into "starvation mode" and suddenly you will be burning fewer and fewer calories each day. (And in some cases, if you trigger this effect, it can take a year or more to get back to normal again.) So, you need to eat enough food, while not eating too much food. However you track your eating, it is important to eat the right amount. If you are on your program, you know you are doing well. You can do this and you can celebrate it as a success!

  2. Exercising enough is important! If you just cut back on your eating, your body will remove muscle and fat tissue, and while the scale drops, so does your muscle mass! Muscles burn a lot of calories, while fat burns very little. So, you are decreasing your body's ability to lose weight, if you lose muscle mass! This is a bad thing. By exercising enough, you keep your muscles toned up and the muscle mass up where it belongs. You can even add additional muscle mass, which will burn many more calories each day, and help you in losing weight, and later in maintaining your weight loss.

    However, don't just jump in and start exercising hard. If you have not been exercising, your body might react badly to a sudden huge change. After you check with your doctor, work up to a good healthy level of exercise, and keep it going. You will lose weight faster, and feel much better for having done it!
There are other important things as well, such as working on keeping your attitude positive and avoiding discouragement, and sabotaging your Journey by quitting. But what is most important is focusing on what you CAN DO, and never on what you cannot do. You can't do a decrease on the scale. No amount of wishing for it will make it happen. No mental trick will lower that scale one milligram. Don't let the scale rule your mind and your attitude. Focus on what you can do, and be happy with that.

I have watched Dotti drop 40 pounds since September. But along with what the scale has been showing, I have tried my best to be a supportive partner, by helping Dotti celebrate how well she has done on her eating the correct amount of food each day! This is so important: Dotti CAN DO it, and Dotti DOES DO IT! Whether the scale goes up or down, or doesn't move at all, doesn't matter; what matters is that she is eating correctly, every single day! If she does that, the scale will follow along in time. It has no choice.

Dotti has been excellent on her exercise as well. She gets up on that elliptical trainer every other day, and has been working it up to a more and more intense workout. She started out a Level 2 intensity, and now she has moved up to Level 10 intensity. She goes for 45 minutes each session. It is focusing on what she can do, and making it happen.

By doing what she can do each day, she has forced the scale to move downwards, because the laws of physics cannot be denied, and if you eat fewer calories than you burn, in time, the scale has to drop, because your mass will drop. Your body cannot magically create or hold onto fat that you don't feed through what you eat. That which you can control, will in the end win out over what you cannot control directly. This is why you are a success every day when you eat right and exercise correctly, even if the scale jumps up a pound or even five pounds on one day or another. If you don't overeat, you will not gain fat weight. So, any increase that you see on the scale is not fat, and therefore is temporary, and will be leaving soon. It has no choice!

Dotti is doing it right, and the change in my wife has been profound indeed! She looks thinner. She feels thinner, when I give her a hug. Her clothes have gotten looser and looser on her, and she has had to get rid of clothes that are just too big to wear any longer. In other words, she IS THINNER!

Not only is she thinner, but the exercise has paid off as well. Last week, we took a trip to the Oregon Zoo. We walked around for a couple of hours, going up and down hills, all over the park. Right near the end we had to go up a hill, and Dotti started walking along and she was starting to leave me behind. I had to ask her to slow down for me. This is the same girl who had trouble walking easily down the hallway in our home just a few months ago. It is the same girl, but it is NOT the same girl either! She has already transformed herself into an active bouncy woman, who likes to walk, and doesn't need help getting in and out of the car. The changes that she has wrought are huge already and she hasn't slowed down. She continues to face each and every day, with a positive attitude and a determination to do what she can do TODAY, to move forward on her Weight Loss Journey.

Dotti doesn't need to be thin for me to be proud of her. She is an amazing woman in an incredible number of ways. I have always been so proud to have her on my arm when we are in public, and I thank my lucky stars each day, wondering what she sees in me, and enjoying my good fortune that she sees it. But on top of that, I am so very proud of Dotti, and what she is doing right now, just like happened in 1998, because she has switched fully into the "I will not fail" mode and she is focused each day on what she can do, and making sure that she does it.

You know, some days Dotti's scale goes up. Some days it stays the same, and some days it drops. But every day, every day, Dotti is a complete success, because she does what she CAN DO that day to move her Journey forward. She is going to goal, and will not be detoured from that aim!

Beef Stroganoff in the Crockpot

Beef Stroganoff in Crockpot
Prep time: 15 mins
Cook time: 8 hours
Total time: 8 hours 15 mins

So easy to make and so delicious to eat.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound beef stew meat
  • 1 cup onion, diced
  • 2 cans Healthy Heart Condensed Golden Mushroom Soup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 ounces Kraft Philly Light Cream Cheese
  • ½ cup mushrooms, I use a 4 oz can of Giorgio Mushrooms No Salt Added
  • ½ cup water

Directions

Except for the cream cheese, add all ingredients to the crockpot. Cook on low for 8 hours. Add the
cream cheese, blending in for 5-10 minutes. Serve over egg noodles.

Nutrition:  Calories: 187 Fat: 7.5g Sugar: 1.1g Fiber: 1.1g Protein: 17.4g Cholesterol: 0mg *3.5 (4.5)

***I now rinse all my canned mushrooms in cold water before using.  It seems to cut down the saltiness of the mushrooms.  I'm guessing most of the sodium comes from the water the mushrooms are packed in.

A Note Weight Commander

The Weight Commander is an awesome program for your Journey. I highly recommend it to all those who are on a Journey of their own. It is a wonderful program to track your progress on any weight loss program you are using. He has many tips and ideas throughout his program, which will help you to be successful on your Journey.

And for those who don't feel comfortable downloading software, or who cringe when Windows gives them another unnecessary warning about running perfectly safe software, Michael has created a wonderful online version of Weight Commander, where you can always access your information with privacy, with no worry about trying to transfer it from computer to computer when you switch. You can of course still get the software version (which continues to work very well, even on my Windows Vista computer ), but the online version of Weight Commander is a wonderful new option! You make the choice, but you win either way. Smile
