Happy Valentine's Day to everyone.  What a wonderful day that was when I met my Valentine while touring his Navy ship, the USS Ozbourn, on Swan Island in Portland, Oregon.  We met in September 1974, and it set my course to become a wife and mother.  He looked so sharp standing watch in his whites uniform.

I'm doing well on my Weight Loss Journey.  Since Sept 2013, I'm back to listening to my Enjoying Weight Loss CD's, I've tracked everything I've eaten, and exercised on the elliptical regularly.  The result: 32 lbs gone!

Pull up a chair and visit for a while.  Al has written a little something about his Valentine: me.  Don't forget to grab your tall glass of water.

♥ To Dotti, My Valentine ♥ 

It was difficult for me to know where to start in writing this—indeed where do I begin discussing something so incredibly dear to my heart that it surpasses all else? This is the month where Valentine's Day resides, and what better time to dwell upon the wonderful memories that I have of and with the love of my life, my Dotti?

But so many memories are tucked away in my mind and my heart, that it is overwhelming. Memories, yes, memories of meeting Dotti, falling in love, almost instantly, and being engaged to be married within weeks, and wondering how I ever got through a single day without her before. In the banner at the top you will see where we went on our first date together alone: Multnomah Falls.

What a marvelous memory it is. Of all the dates that were possible in the city of Portland, Dotti chose to go into the Columbia River Gorge, and hike up to the top of Multnomah Falls. I had never even heard of Multnomah Falls before, having only checked onboard my ship in Portland a couple of months before I met Dotti.

It was a wonderful date. (Some of you reading this have walked that trail with us in later years, since two of our DWLZ ConferencesConference 3 and Conference 5 have included an outing to this marvelous location in the great outdoors.) We walked up the trail, through the pines, talking and laughing all the way up. It was a glorious day, and I could hardly believe my great fortune in having met this beautiful girl, only 17 years old, but wise beyond her years, and simply bubbling over with love of life and eager to find fun things to do. The trail switched back and forth and up and up for 700 feet into the air, before dropping back down to come out at the very top of the falls. Wow!

And there, I was surrounded by beauty, the likes of which I had never seen before, standing on a platform, watching the Multnomah Creek run along beside us, and then take that huge leap over the cliff, and looking out over the mighty Columbia River, which had started its run from all the way up in Canada, and carried water from such great rivers as the Snake and the Spokane, and it flowed wide and proud, past us and towards the city of Portland, while trees, grand lofty evergreens, leaped into the sky, towering even above this high perch we shared, and they reached for the clouds flowing by, but truly, dimming even this glorious spectacle by her own lovely dimpled smile, Dotti stood there beside me.

I knew I had found a woman who was unlike any girl I had ever known before. I had seen her ice skate, and she could skate circles around me. What I didn't know yet, was that she could flat tear me up on the tennis court too. She could dive and swim well, and do so many things I had never found in a woman who was interested in me before. This was no china doll, despite her beauty. Dotti was someone so special I was in awe of her. I still am! She was fun, intelligent and to my everlasting joy, when I asked her to marry me, she said yes!

I was a sailor, and that took us many places. Our first real home after we were married was on a little island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. We had to sift the bugs out of our flour we got from the commissary. We had one faucet in our entire house that had drinking water flowing through it, and all the rest of the plumbing was non-potable brackish water. There were no private cars on Midway Island and we either walked or rode our bicycles wherever we went. Something as simple as shopping for groceries was a trick on Midway. But Dotti came with me to this out of the way place, and we had a son born during that time, and caring for a baby under those conditions was a challenge, but one that Dotti not only was up to, but thrived while doing it.

As well as the island, we have lived in deserts, and forest green, Virginia humidity, and Massachusetts snow. And the Navy put one more heavy burden on my Dotti, because I had to be away far too often. Six or seven months as sea, while Dotti was at home keeping things running with two sons, minding the bills, the emergencies, and everything else, and she did it like a pro. If I had found Aladdin's lamp and asked the genie to conjure up the perfect girl for me, it would have been Dotti!

And, as if all of that were not enough, she goes and creates a huge web page to help people who want to lose weight. Even with all her talents, which I knew of before, she found this new thing that I never, ever expected. When I was working with computers, and writing programs and such, she wanted no part of it. And then she all at once switched on, and suddenly was living at the computer keyboard. The rest is, as they say, history.

Looking at the pictures in the banner above, you might be able to grasp a bit of the changes that have occurred over the years since I first laid eyes on my Dotti. In 1974, I was smitten. That smile Dotti flashed me dazzled my eyes into blindness, I couldn't see anything else. Today, we are so close that it is like two trees you see in the forest that have become one at the base, having grown together and no longer having a separate existence. Dotti is far more than merely being my better half, far more indeed! We are truly one, and the heart medallion that I bought for Dotti on our wedding day in Seattle, Washington, stated what has become a reality today: Our hearts beat as one.

Thank you Dotti! Thank you for everything! Mary Poppins was "Practically perfect in every way," but you are better than that! For me you are completely perfect in every way. You are my perfect match, my soulmate and reason to be. I love you, and I am bound to you, as I am to my own body.

A lady, who was commenting on Dotti's Weight Loss Zone, once described me as "the most love struck man on the internet." That is clearly an understatement; I don't think limiting it to just the Internet is at all inclusive enough: more accurate would be "in the world!" Dotti is my Valentine, my wife, my best friend, and, let's face it, she is my life.

I wish you and all those you love, and care about, a happy and loved filled Valentine's Day and every day from this day forward! Love may not be all you need, but all you need is made infinitely better when you have love.

Slimming Cocktails

Below are three cocktails that contain ingredients that have been proven to help you get slim.  Who said you can't have a cocktail?

Blueberry Punch - Serves 4
In a small pan, bring 1/2 cup blueberries, 1 tbsp sugar and 1/2 cup water to a boil.  Cook 1 minute, breaking up berries as you cook. Strain syrup, reserving the liquid (should have about 1/2 cup). Cool for 15 minutes. Fill a large pitcher with ice and add the blueberry syrup, 2 cups sparkling water and 6 oz elderflower-flavored liqueur (such as St-Germain).  Stir well and pour into 4 glasses.  Garnish each cocktail with 3 blueberries and a lavender sprig.  Serve immediately. 

Per serving: 177 Calories, 0g Total Fat, 0g Dietary Fiber, 44g Carbohydrate, 0g Protein *5 (4.0)

Apple-Limetini - Serves 4
In a large pitcher, place 1 medium apple, peeled and finely diced, 6 oz vodka, juice of 2 limes (1/4 cup) and 1 tbsp sugar.  Stir well and refrigerate at least 4 hours.  Stir in 2 cups lime or lemon-flavored chilled sparkling water. Divide among 4 glasses.  Garnish each cocktail with 1 lime wedge and an apple blossom or daisy to make it pretty.  Serve immediately.

Per serving: 132 Calories, 0g Total Fat, 1g Dietary Fiber, 33g Carbohydrate, 0g Protein *4.0 (3.0)

Kiwi-Cucumber Sparkler - Serves 4
In a blender, process 1-1/2 peeled kiwis, 1/2 peeled cucumber (small, 5 oz), 1 tbsp honey and 1/2 cup water, until smooth.  Strain, reserving the liquid.  Fill a large pitcher with ice and add the kiwi-cucumber liquid, 3 cups lime or lemon-flavored chilled sparkling water and 6 oz Pimm's No. 1.  Stir well and divide among 4 glasses. Add 1 slice kiwi and 1 slice cucumber to each.  Serve immediately.

Per serving: 118 Calories, 0g Total Fat, 1g Dietary Fiber, 29g Carbohydrate, 1g Protein *3.5 (2.5)

This is a favorite treat of ours that I make in a small bowl instead of a cup. This recipe makes it so easy to have a little cake but not having the whole cake staring at me for days.  I've got several different containers holding different flavors. This recipe makes individual servings.

Makes 1 serving

1 package Angel Food Cake Mix
1 package Devil's Food Cake Mix

Mix together the two boxes of cake mix. Blend thoroughly.  Store in a seal-tight container.

When you want to have a serving of this delicious cake all you have to do is the following:

Mix 3 tablespoons of the cake mix with 2 tablespoons water.  Place in microwave for 1:15 minutes.  We top our little cake with Light Whipped Cream or Cool Whip but that is optional.

Per serving: 125 Calories, 0g Total Fat, 0g Dietary Fiber, 31g Carbohydrate, 0mg Sodium, 0g Protein *3.5 (2.5)

Comic Relief

Scale: How To Use It

When using the home scale, these simple rules must be followed:

  1. Always place the scale on thick shag carpeting (it would be more beneficial to place it under 4 1/2 feet of water, but this is often difficult in a bathroom and is very hard on scales).

  2. Hold tightly onto the sink or shower rod (both when possible) and gradually release the weight of the body onto the scale.

  3. Make sure needle placement is accurate by cautiously adjusting the little round knob on the center-front, very slowly to the left. (Zero is a wide number and should be treated accordingly.)

    WARNING: Stay away from digital scales. (They are not properly adjustable and therefore inaccurate.)

Scale Tidbits
  • "Will you look at that! I've lost .37542 of a pound!"

  • Do not weigh yourself constantly. Every time you stand on the scales it stretches the little springs and wing nuts inside and slowly presses them flat - the result, even with no weight gain whatsoever, is that the scale makes you appear to weigh a little more each time.

  • "I'll just give the scales a quick flick - dust can weigh TONS, you know..."

  • There's one thing that will give you more for your money than it would ten years ago - the penny scale.

  • It's no good tiptoeing up to the bathroom scales - they hear you coming.

  • Bathroom scales: equipment which only seems to work correctly when one holds on to towel rail, stands on one foot and leans hard to the left.
