Make it Happen

Hi everyone!  How are all of you doing this fine Fall day?  I am doing fantastic and it is due to the fact that I am back to listening to my Hypnosis CD's, exercising on my elliptical regularly, and journaling my food.  You know, that can really make a difference in your whole being, but you already know that, I'm sure.

Hugs to all who need them and Get Well wishes to all of you, and those that you love, who are under the weather!

Let's find that comfy chair, grab our water and enjoy our visit together.  Bring your SMILE along with you.

Enjoying Halloween on Program
Happy Halloween

Halloween is the start of the celebration period of the year.  First Halloween, then holiday after holiday until after New Years.  How will we ever survive this onslaught of candy, homemade baked goods—comfort food?  Well, let's start with Halloween, which will be here in 17 days. Let me ask you a few questions before we get started.  How many of you have planned Halloween to fit into your Program?  What is your plan for the leftover candy?  How about that Halloween party you've been invited to—do you have a plan to help you stay on your Program?  How many of you have no plan for Halloween?  Okay, looks like we have to come up with a plan to enjoy Halloween without blowing our Program.

Let's look at a few ways for limiting our candy and sweets on—as well as before and after—Halloween.

  • Buy only candy that you don't like, so you will not be tempted to eat some yourself.

How many times do we buy candy that we personally like in order to hand it out to all the eager young trick-or-treaters?

I can tell you that in the past I have always done that.  Since I've been on Program, I try to buy candy I don't like because I don't want to wear it on my hips, so to speak.

When you buy candy you like, you are setting yourself up for failure on Program.  You are planning to eat some of that candy or you would not have bought the kind you like.  Let's change that this Halloween. If you are planning to buy some candy or goodies to hand out to our trick-or-treaters please buy the kind you don't like; the kind you won't be tempted to eat.  If that's not possible, throw away in the outside trash, all leftover candy.  You will be so happy you did.  Good luck!

  • Wait until the last minute to buy your Halloween candy.

Don't buy the candy as soon as you see it on the shelf, because I guarantee you that it will be gone before Halloween gets here.  I don't know how many times in my life that I have bought Halloween candy weeks before I actually had to hand it out only to have to re-purchase the candy for the kids.  I'm sure you can all guess where it went?

Why set yourself up for failure on your Program?  Why not wait this year to buy that Halloween candy? By doing so, you will be in control of the candy and not the other way around.  A good feeling for sure!

  • Make sure the candy is lowfat.

If the candy you buy is lowfat it will do far less damage if you sneak a piece.  I've been known to eat a piece of candy even though I knew I didn't like it, just because it is the only candy available.  On top of that, the whole time I'm eating it I'm saying, "I really don't like this piece of candy."  Of course, I still finish the candy because that's what I do.  I know this about myself so I really try hard to not set myself up for failure on Program.

  • Try handing out something other than candy.

I had a very good friend who had a son with diabetes and he really had to watch eating the candy.  They decided one year to hand out nickels.  What a great treat—money!  Maybe instead of money you could try snack-sized bags of pretzels.  One year I gave out pencils and they really were a huge hit, believe it or not.  You don't have to stick to the traditional way.

How about those Halloween parties—are you prepared to stay on Program while attending the party?  Let's look at a few ways that can help you do just that.

  • Bring a healthy snack, so you have something to eat that keeps you on Program. How easy is that? Plus, I will bet you that there are others at that party that need that healthy snack to stay on their Program too.  By bringing your healthy snack you are back in the drivers seat and in control of what goes into your mouth.

  • Don't leave home without your large water bottle. Chug, chug, chug away! Drinking water will keep you full and away from the snack table.  The added bonus is that water is great for you!  Having a bottle of water in your hands will also keep that hand from taking easy-to-grab food.

  • Make sure you eat before you go.  By doing this you are guaranteed not to be hungry at the party and will be doing a lot less nibbling while there.  I know the last thing I want to do, when my stomach is screaming it's full, is to eat more food.

  • Choose fruit over candy and snacks, when available. Most parties have some healthy choices.  Try to focus on them instead of the candy and snacks.  I know, easier said than done! When you go towards the sweets say to yourself, "Do I like it enough to wear it?"  I'll bet your answer is no!
  • Volunteer to help while there.  Take pictures, clean up, make sure they all have their food, or even run the Halloween contest. If you are too busy to eat…well, problem solved. Smile

  • Try to focus on your family and friends. This is a chance to catch up with some of your friends and family.  Use it.  Anybody who knows me, knows I love to talk and visit. When you are busy talking and visiting with your friends eating is out of the question.  Think of how much 'catching up' you can do by staying away from the buffet table.

  • Sit far, far away from the food table.  There is no need to sit there and punish yourself, drooling over the food you desperately want but can't have because you know it's a red-light food.  You won't stop at just one.  So, sit far, far away from those temptations.

How many of you work at an office?  I'll bet that most of you have seen, or walk by, candy on your fellow employee's desk.  Not fun, is it?

Why not politely ask that person to put the candy in the desk or somewhere else out of sight?  Of course, you will have the ones who won't oblige you.  What do you do then?  You could ask them to please put the candy in a colored container with a solid lid so you don't see the actual candy or hear it calling your name. (If you explain why, it might help. Sometimes, when a coworker understands that this is a real struggle for you, cooperation is easier to get.)  It is a known fact that we will eat more of the candy when it's visible because the visibility makes us think about it more.  Every time you see the candy dish you have to make a decision whether  you are going to eat any or not.

If you do start nibbling on those fun size candies please try and keep the wrappers where you can see them.  They will be a reminder of how much you've consumed and just how quickly the calories are adding up.  Scary, if you think about how fast you can get 4-6 pieces of candy consumed.  So, be accountable.  Visuals really are a wonderful way to scare you back on Program!

Try to take a short walk on your break.  You will get some fresh air, which will invigorate you and help you over those mid-morning and mid-afternoon slumps where you ‘think’ you are hungry.

Make your own costume if you are going to a costume party. As you can see below my costume was not made for 'eating' but I sure did have fun wearing it - lots of laughs & good times with little chance of blowing my program! BTW ~ I've won first place more than once with this fun costume.

We have discussed a few ways to celebrate Halloween
successfully on Program.  I do hope that you will try
andmake it your most successful Halloween ever!

Have a very Happy Halloween with lots of laughter
and wonderful times.

All the restaurants have been updated to include the PointsPlus system as well as the classic Points system! We have the web page and the phone app synchronized, so they both show the same data, and they are all updated with the new system!

We have been very happy to see the wonderful response to Dotti's Food Score. It is Dotti To Go for your iPhone, iPad, or Android phone. (We want to thank those of you who have taken the time to give us high marks at the iPhone store!)

I will be working hard to update restaurants and add some new ones.

When you go out to eat, you can know what to order, and how much you are eating by checking Dotti's Food Score, and let it help you make the right choices. With nearly 600 restaurants to choose from you will almost always find, your exact restaurant, or if not, one that is very similar to it, to give you help in making an estimate about menu items and their nutritional value.

Staying "Young"

  1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height.
  2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.
  3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. 'An idle mind is the devil's workshop.'
  4. Enjoy the simple things.
  5. Laugh often, long and loud Laugh until you gasp for breath and your belly hurts.
  6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is with us our entire life is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.
  7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your place. Do with it what YOU want...
  8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help from someone who looks healthy and fit.
  9. Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.
  10. Tell the people you love that you love them, and at every opportunity.

"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take,
but by the moments that take our breath away."

We all need to live life to its fullest each day!!

Worry about nothing, appreciate and be grateful about everything!

Weight Loss Help For You

Enjoying Weight Loss CDs

I believe in using every tool available to me to help me stay on Program and keep motivated. Dr. Roberta's CDs are one of the tools I love. They help me stay motivated and build my self-esteem.

2011 was one of the most difficult ones I have ever faced. I lost both of my hips to arthritis (see Straight From the Hip for details), so I couldn't even stand up without pain, let alone walk. But guess what? That year I still lost 30 pounds! The CD's did NOT replace the program, but instead they enabled me to stay with my program. I am so thankful I had this source of support!

Dr. Roberta has created a new program, called Weight Loss For Life. I have started using it, and I like it. It is not a replacement program; it is a companion program, to work hand-in-hand with Enjoying Weight Loss. Each program focuses on different areas to help you with your Journey, and you can be sure I will be using them both! I am using the new program to help with dealing with stress, which is overwhelming at times. I am using the old program to help keep my exercise motivation alive and well. Whatever set of CDs you end up with will be a great asset in your weight loss Journey.

These programs helped me to lose weight at a time when it could hardly have been any more difficult
for me. I believe in these programs, and I hope you find them as helpful as I have!

Wedding Situation

Jennifer's wedding day was fast approaching. Nothing could dampen her excitement - not even her parent's nasty divorce.

Her mother had found the PERFECT dress to wear, and would be the best-dressed mother-of-the-bride ever!

A week later, Jennifer was horrified to learn that her father's new, young wife had bought the exact same dress as her mother!

Jennifer asked her father's new young wife to exchange it, but she refused. "Absolutely not! I look like a million bucks in this dress, and I'm wearing it," she replied.

Jennifer told her mother who graciously said, "Never mind sweetheart. I'll get another dress. After all, it's your special day."

A few days later, they went shopping, and did find another gorgeous dress for her mother.

When they stopped for lunch, Jennifer asked her mother,

''Aren't you going to return the other dress? You really don't have another occasion where you could wear it."

Her mother just smiled and replied, "Of course I do, dear...I'm wearing it to the rehearsal dinner the night BEFORE the wedding."

Software You Can Use! — And Now Available Online!

A Note Weight Commander

The Weight Commander is an awesome program for your Journey. I highly recommend it to all those who are on a Journey of their own. It is a wonderful program to track your progress on any weight loss program you are using. You can read My Review of the Weight Commander or go straight to the source and check out this great software by following this link to Weight Commander . He has many tips and ideas throughout his program, which will help you to be successful on your Journey.

And for those who don't feel comfortable downloading software, or who cringe when Windows gives them another unnecessary warning about running perfectly safe software, Michael has created a wonderful online version of Weight Commander , where you can always access your information with privacy, with no worry about trying to transfer it from computer to computer when you switch. You can of course still get the software version (which continues to work very well, even on my Windows Vista computer ), but the online version of Weight Commander is a wonderful new option! You make the choice, but you win either way. Smile
