Good morning everyone. Hope this newsletter is finding you all well. Except for the hot weather holding on, Al and I are doing fine.
We just finished a great 12-day visit with our son Glenn, his wife Miho, and our grandson, Kai. It was so great seeing them again. They live in Japan but have been getting stateside every two years. Kai is 15 already!
Al and I are hoping to get back up to Spokane for our granddaughters
2nd birthday. She is growing up so fast. We missed her first birthday
so really don't want to miss this one.

Dotti's Weight Loss Zone 15th Anniversary

Dotti kicked off Dotti's Weight Loss Zone on September 12, 1998, and we are coming up on the 15th anniversary of that event. It hardly seems possible that so many years have gone by. Looking back it still seems like a miracle that this all ever happened.

Events in 1995 set in motion the chain of events that led to Dotti's Weight Loss Zone's birth. After leaving the Navy, in the summer of 1988, we moved from Virginia Beach, Virginia up to Massachusetts, where I took a job working on ion implanters. In early 1990, I moved over to the training department and took a position as a technical instructor, teaching technicians how to maintain several of our ion implanter systems, a position I remained in for over 5 years.
In 1995, our son, LeRoy, graduated from high school, and coincidently, a job came open in my company for a Field Service Engineer position in Portland, Oregon for that summer, where I could put what I had been teaching to practice. The timing was great for us!
The company form for requesting a job transfer was printed on green paper, so it was called "a green sheet." When I called up Dotti at home, and told her that the job was available, she replied, "You haven't put in your green sheet yet?" Yes, we both love the Pacific Northwest generally, and the Portland/Vancouver area especially. We met in Portland in 1974, and we were married in Vancouver in 1976, but had to leave because I was in the Navy and we were stationed on Midway Island that year. It nearly took us 20 years to move back, but we finally made it.
That move was the first step. The next step was when our son Glenn, who was then in the Navy, came to visit us with his new wife, in early 1997. Big brother Glenn talked LeRoy, who was still living at home at the time, into joining the Navy, and a month later, LeRoy had enlisted and was off to boot camp! Wow!
That was a huge change in our lives. Glenn was stationed in Japan, and we were not to see him for several years. LeRoy also ended up in Japan, so we were a long ways from our boys for a time.
With LeRoy gone, Dotti and I decided we didn't need such a large place any longer, and we moved into an apartment that was pretty cramped, to cut expenses, but Dotti made it a home anyway, a fun place to be, as she has managed to do wherever we have lived over the years. As it turned out this was another step in the chain of events leading to DWLZ.
In November of 1997, due to our limited space, Dotti was suddenly hit with the thought that she was holding onto a lot of old clothes that were much too small to wear, and she wasn't going to ever need them probably. She was 100 pounds overweight, and every attempt she had made in the past to lose it, had failed.
So, she went through all her old clothes and tossed out the skinny ones. I don't know for sure, but that may have been the final step she needed mentally, because she decided, almost immediately thereafter, that she would go to Weight Watchers, and do whatever they said to do, and see what happened.
She started preparing for this the month of December, beginning at the weight of 245 pounds, but even with Christmas and all those temptations to eat lots of calories, it didn't phase her commitment. She lost over 10 pounds during the month of December, before even going to her first meeting in January, where she weigh-in at 233 pounds. Just paying attention and not overdoing it during December had helped a great deal, without even having a plan to work with yet.
As cool as that was, neither one of us was ready for what happened next. Dotti went to her first meeting on January 5 of 1998, and proceeded to work the program intensely, ferociously even, with no let up, and no detours. She tracked her Points, and started exercising as well. For me, the thing that told me more than anything else that she was serious, was her getting up in the morning, around 4am, to drive to Gresham, 30 minutes away, to go to the gym, do a one hour workout and then drive back home, and arrive before I was even up for my workday. Dotti is not a morning person; she hates mornings with a passion. She always has. Only pure, distilled dedication, would make her get up early just to exercise, which was also not one of her favorite things to do.
She religiously followed her program and did her exercise at least 3 times a week, and often we both would go over to the gym on the weekend in addition to what she was doing.
I only wish I could bottle what was driving her, because it was like magic, truly amazing. Dotti walked all the way down to her goal weight without a single plateau, or setback. Including the month of December, 1997, Dotti had lost 100 pounds by August 17, of 1998. From August 31, when she officially hit her goal of 144 pounds, until she officially made "Lifetime" at Weight Watchers, she dropped down to 138 pounds! And did she look awesome!!!
I had quit smoking in May of that same year, and in my studying the topic of addictions and destructive behavior, in order to help me quit (quitting smoking was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life), I learned that helping someone else to quit smoking could help me to stay quit.
Well, if it worked for smoking, why not weight loss? I suggested to Dotti that she might consider starting a web page to help a few people do what she had done, and thereby help herself to stay thin. As it turned out the results of that suggestion was on the level of suggesting to Forest Gump he might take up jogging. I gave her a little template html for a homepage I had created, and she took that humble offering and set about creating a monster page, that was all her own: Dotti's Weight Loss Zone.
I can't begin to describe the work she put into this project. I would go to bed in the evening as she was typing on the computer, and when I woke up in the morning, she was still typing! The man-hours she put into creating the restaurant data was simply superhuman.
And before long people started noticing. A newspaper column noted it by November, and people started sharing the URL at Weight Watchers meetings.
What followed next was an explosion. Suddenly Dotti's page buried the server it was on, with too many visitors to handle. We moved to a new one and another one, each time finding that we just couldn't get the bandwidth to handle all the people who wanted to visit Dotti's Weight Loss Zone. We bought the URL dottisweightlosszone.com and that was the only one we had for a time. But people didn't care, they passes around that long URL name anyway. Finally we decided to buy DWLZ.com as well and that has become the primary address that people use today.
For the next 3 and a half years Dotti was able to use the positive feedback from the page and her continued resolve to hold steady, to remain at her goal weight!
In 2001, Dotti had her first Dotti's Weight Loss Zone Conference. It just came together and it was wonderful! Meeting so many Zonies, and sharing success stories and friendship was one of the true highlights of our life. It felt like it would go on forever.
That event helped me to catch fire, with all that motivation around me. I started my Journey, and lost over 50 pounds. (It helped bring closure to my quitting smoking as well, because I put on a lot of pounds when I quit and I finally took them off, 3 years later.)
Dotti and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary that year, and Dotti weight about the same as she had on the day we got married! She was beautiful in June of 1976, and she was just as beautiful in June of 2001, reminding me of just how lucky I am to have this marvelous woman as my wife!

Live One Day At a Time
There are two days in every week
about which we should not worry;

Mix Up Your Treadmill Workout
Below is a treadmill workout that mixes up the workout. (Please make sure you are physically fit enough to do this. A 15 incline is steep, and if you are not used to it, you could easily get into trouble pushing yourself that hard. In fact, every one of the following steps are going to be difficult, unless you are in good shape right now. As with all exercise, check with your doctor before jumping into any strenuous exercise program!)
Warm-up to get blood flowing.
Big hill, pump your arms to propel yourself and stay off the handrails.
Incline goes down, but your speed goes up.
This 11 percent now seems like nothing.
Speedwalk. Almost halfway to finish.
Resist breaking into a jog. You are still walking.
This almost easier than the power walk.
Leveling out. The 3 percent incline feels flat.
Going a steady pace. Legs should feel light.
Flat road. You are nearing the end.
Walk for a 3-minute cool down. You have just burned 245 calories by mixing up your workout. Congratulations!

Weight Loss Help For You
I believe in using every tool available to me to help me stay on Program and keep motivated. Dr. Roberta's CDs are one of the tools I love. They help me stay motivated and build my self-esteem.

My Thighs Were Stolen From Me...
My thighs were stolen from me during the night of August 3rd a few years ago. It was just that quick. I went to sleep in my body and woke up with someone else's thighs. The new ones had the texture of cooked oatmeal. Who would have done such a cruel thing to legs that had been wholly, if imperfectly, mine for years? Whose thighs were these? What happened to mine?
I spent the entire summer looking for them. I searched, in vain, at pools and beaches, anywhere I might find female limbs exposed. I became obsessed. I had nightmares filled with cellulite and flesh that turns to bumps in the night. Finally, hurt and angry, I resigned myself to living out my life in jeans and Sheer Energy pantyhose.
Then, just when my guard was down, the thieves struck again. My buns were next. I knew it was the same gang because they took pains to match my new derriere (although badly attached at least 3 inches lower than the original) to the thighs they had stuck me with earlier. Now my rear complimented my legs lump for lump. Frantic, I prayed that long skirts would stay in fashion.
It was 2 years ago when I realized my arms had been switched. One morning while fixing my hair, I watched horrified but fascinated as the flesh of my upper arms swung to and fro with the motion of the hairbrush. This was really getting scary. My body was being replaced, cleverly and fiendishly, one section at a time.
Age? Age had nothing to do with it. Age was supposed to creep up, unnoticed and intangible, something like maturity. NO, I was being attacked, repeatedly and without warning. During one spring, my attention was riveted to upper arms---female arms. I studied them from every angle, being careful not to raise mine in public nor flatten them too tightly against my body. In private I held them straight out and did endless circles that would have tightened my real arms but did nothing for these silly putty caricatures. In the end, in deepening despair, I gave up my T-shirts.
What could they do to me next? In short order, my eyes began to remind people that they needed a new pair of Hush Puppies. My poor neck disappeared more quickly than the Thanksgiving turkey it now reminded me of. That's why I've decided to tell my story: I can't take on the medical profession by myself. Women of America, wake up and smell the coffee! That isn't really "plastic" those surgeons are using. You know where they're getting those replacement parts, don't you? The next time you suspect someone has had a face "lifted," look again. Was it lifted from you? Check out those tummy tucks and buttocks raising. Look familiar? Are those your eyelids on that movie star?
I think I finally may have found my thighs. I hope Cindy Crawford paid a really good price for them.

Hash Brown, Sausage & Egg Muffins
Makes 12 servings
- 1 1/2 unsalted butter, melted
- 1 1/2 lb Russet potatoes, peeled and shredded
- 1/4 tsp plus 1/8 tsp sea salt, divided
- 1/4 tsp plus 1/8 tsp ground black pepper, divided
- Olive oil cooking spray
- 3/4 cup grated low-fat Swiss cheese, divided
- 1 - 3 oz cooked chicken sausage, diced
- 3 scallions, chopped
- 3 large eggs
- 3 large egg whites
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Brush a 12-count muffin tin with butter, making sure the base of each muffin cup is thoroughly coated. Transfer potatoes to a colander and extract as much water as possible. Squeeze the potatoes between layers of paper towels until very dry. Transfer potatoes to a large bowl, add 1/4 tsp each of salt and pepper. Stir to combine.
Add about 1/3 cup potatoes to each muffin cup. Press the potatoes into the base and up the sides of each muffin cup, creating a "nest". Bake until edges of potatoes are golden brown, about 20 minutes, turning halfway through. Reduce oven to 350 degrees.
Lightly mist the top edges of the muffin tin around each muffin cup with cooking spray. Divide 1/2 cup cheese among the 12 potato "nests". In a medium bowl, whisk eggs, egg whites and remaining salt and pepper. Pour evenly into the "nests". Top each "nest" evenly with remaining 1/4 cup cheese.
Bake until egg is set and cheese is melted, 12 to 15 minutes. Cool in pan for 10 minutes before serving.

Commander , where you can always access your information with privacy, with no
worry about trying to transfer it from computer to computer when you
switch. You can of course still get the software version (which
continues to work very well, even on my Windows Vista computer ), but the online version of Weight
Commander is a wonderful new option! You make the choice, but you win either way.
