typing on computer  Hi everyone!  Here we are again, settled in for a nice visit today.  Here in Spokane it is quite sunny with a hint of rain and the temps are around 50 degrees.  It's the wind that kills you, especially up here on the prairie.  Don't you love the sound of howling wind? Al and I just love it, especially when we are lying there falling asleep.

I wanted to mention something, that I think is really cool; Vitalicious, one of our long-term sponsors has won the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval! This has been a respected sign of quality since I was a little girl, and we are proud to have Vitalicious supporting us, as we try to support you in your Journey. (If you haven't tried them, we highly recommend their products—they are good!)

Today I want to talk a little about how and why we have to get to the breaking point to get back on Program and back on the right path to a healthy and better self.  Anyone who has had to lose weight knows what I'm talking about.

Are you all settled into your most comfy chair with your tall glass of sparkling water?  If not, you still have time before we get started with our visit today.  Don't forget to bring those SMILES Smile with you.

Why Do We Wait So Long?
    By Dotti

As you all know from my history there have been several times in my past that I let myself get so bad, so heavy, that I didn't think I was ever going to find myself again. Back in 1998 when I lost my 100 lbs. I knew that 1998 was the year I was going to make goal.  I just knew.  Something had kicked in when I was first approached by a good friend in Nov 1997 about the new Weight Watchers Points Plan.  You ask, "What clicked?"  Heck, if I could tell you, I'd click that switch right now! Smile

I was nearing 250 lbs then, and of course, I was uncomfortable and I felt miserable, although you never saw that on my face in public. I wasn't really suffering any aches and pains that would challenge any particular everyday activity.  I wasn't having problems breathing, or having any medical issues that were warning me to lose weight, and lose it now

A month before I was told about this new Points Program at Weight Watchers, I had thrown away all my old "skinny" clothes, thinking that I would never wear them again.  Little did I know, a year later I would be wearing the same size as those I tossed out, after losing 100 lbs. That was in October 1998 after starting the new Points Program on Jan 5th of that same year.

I was so meticulous in my Journaling, and doing the whole program for that matter. There were no skip days.  I went to the gym faithfully 3 times a week, leaving the house at 4 am to go to my gym 30 minutes away.  I didn't look at the Program and say, "Well, I can do this, but won't do this..."; you get the message I think.  I did what the leader told me to do.  I was in the "zone" and ready to be the best I could be.

I tell this story a lot but it's absolutely true. While I was on Program to lose my weight in 1998, you could've come up to me and offered me a million dollars to go off Program and I can tell you, I would not have done it.  I wanted it that bad.

So, what happened?  Why did everything fall into place then and not now when I need to re-lose this weight more than anything else?  Again, I don't know (but sure wish I did).

I've lost about 23 lbs since I learned both my hips would need to be replaced.  Twenty-three pounds—not many pounds lost and most definitely not enough to get my hips replaced.  I can tell I don't have the dedication to do what needs to be done to get this weight off.  In my case, the pain is continuous and reminds me every minute about how much I need this weight off NOW.  I could list a hundred reasons why I'm not doing what needs to be done but what good is that?  It accomplishes nothing.

Of course, I cannot exercise like I would like to with both hips being extremely bad, but what is wrong with following Program, drinking my water, and Journaling?  They don't use my hips.  Every time I get up from sitting down, I scream out in pain.  Every time I get in and out of the car, I scream out in pain.  Why isn't that enough to get myself in gear and follow my Program like I should?

Can you tell I'm a bit frustrated at my situation?  I need my hips replaced.  I need to lose weight to make that happen in the best way possible, medically speaking, concerning the surgery and recovery.  I have constant pain, which keeps me stressed, leaving me with very little motivation to do what I need to do.  It's a vicious circle that I need to break.

I know I'm not the only one who seems to be stuck in a situation where it seems impossible to do what needs to be done. Most of us have been there and gotten the t-shirt. Our minds can work with us or against us.  Amazing how one moment I am gung-ho and ready to do what needs to be done and then the next moment, it's gone!

So, what's to be done?

  • Well, for one, no quitting is allowed.  You must keep on keeping on no matter what, even if you have to "fake it till you make it".  Quitting is not an option.

  • Secondly, don't beat yourself up for not being perfect.  None of us are.  We need to keep in mind that if we are not ready to dedicate 100% right now, don't you worry, it will be there eventually.

  • Try not to let things that happen, upset you and get in the way of your Journey.  I know I've been guilty of that as little as about 3 weeks ago;  a leader, at my meeting, hurt me terribly by what she said to me, and I've let her tirade control my thinking for the past couple of weeks.  Guess what?  It's you that is important and it's you that has to make this happen.  I am looking for a new meeting!

Again, I'm trying to rededicate myself to the art of staying on Program, drinking my water, journaling my food, mood and activity and most of all, loving myself, no matter.  For you see, my weight doesn't define me.  I define me.  What I do and say defines me. That being said, the extra weight is not good for me and I must lose it to become that healthy self I know I can become.  All of your support is the icing on the cake, so to speak, to helping me accomplish this goal.

You can do it too!  Remember what I've said, because it all applies to you too. I'm sending you all love, support, hugs and lots of fun while on your Journey.

Hugs! Dotti

Bacon & Eggs Over Asparagus

     Makes 4 main-dish servings

  • 8 slices bacon
  • 1 lb asparagus spears, trimmed
  • 1/2 tsp fresh thyme leaves, chopped
  • Salt & pepper
  • 8 large eggs
  • 3 tbsp packed fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves, chopped
  • 1 tbsp fresh dill, chopped

Preheat the oven to 475 degrees.  Take an 18" x 12" jelly-roll pan, arrange bacon slices in single layer; spacing 1/4 inch apart. Roast 8 to 9 minutes or until browned and crisp. Transfer to paper-towel-lined plate; set aside. Drain and discard excess bacon fat in the pan, leaving thin film of fat.

Add asparagus to pan in single layer.  Roll in fat until evenly coated.  Arrange in tight single layer with bottoms of spears touching one long side of pan.  Sprinkle thyme and 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper on asparagus.  Roast 8 to 10 minutes or until asparagus spears are tender and browned.

Carefully crack eggs, without breaking yolks directly on asparagus spears, staggering if necessary and spacing 1/4 inch apart.  Carefully return pan to oven and roast 5 to 6 minutes or until whites are just set and yolks are still runny.  Sprinkle 18 tsp salt and 1/8 tsp freshly ground black pepper on eggs.  Return bacon to pan; sprinkle eggs and asparagus with parsley and dill.  To serve, use wide spatula transfer to serving plate.

Positive Weight Loss Approach

Once you have made up your mind to lose weight, you should make that commitment and go into it with a positive attitude. We all know that losing weight can be quite a challenge. In fact, for some, it can be downright tough. It takes time, practice and support to change lifetime habits. But it's a process you must learn in order to succeed. You and you alone are the one who has the power to lose unwanted pounds.

Think like a winner, and not a loser—remember that emotions are like muscles and the ones you use most grow the strongest. If you always look at the negative side of things, you'll become a downbeat, pessimistic person. Even slightly negative thoughts have a greater impact on you and last longer than powerful positive thoughts. Negative thinking doesn't do you any good, it just holds you back from accomplishing the things you want to do. When a negative thought creeps into your mind, replace it reminding yourself that you're somebody, you have self-worth and you possess unique strengths and talents.

Contemplate what lies ahead of you. Losing weight is not just about diets. It's about a whole new you and the possibility of creating a new life for yourself. Investigate the weight loss programs that appeal to you and that you feel will teach you the behavioral skills you need to stick with throughout the weight-loss process. First you should look for support among family and friends. It can be an enormous help to discuss obstacles and share skills and tactics with others on the same path. You might look for this support from others you know who are in weight loss programs and you can seek guidance from someone you know who has lost weight and kept it off.

There are success stories across the country today. On television and in newspapers, magazines and tabloids about people who have miraculously lost untold pounds and kept it off. In all instances they say their mental attitude as well as their outlook on life has totally changed.

Diets and weight loss programs are more flexible now than they once were and there are many prepared foods already portioned out. They are made attractive and can be prepared in a matter of minutes. Low-fat and low-calorie foods are on shelves everywhere. You will probably need to learn new, wiser eating skills. You will want a weight loss regimen that gives you some control, rather than imposing one rigid system. Look for one that offers a variety of different eating plans, so you can choose the one that's best for you.

Keep in mind, too, that your weight loss program will most likely include some physical exercises. Look at the exercising aspect of your program as fun and recreation and not as a form of grueling and sweaty work. The fact is that physical fitness is linked inseparable to all personal effectiveness in every field. Anyone willing to take the few simple steps that lie between them and fitness will shortly begin to feel better, and the improvement will reflect itself in every facet of their existence. Doctors now say that walking is one of the best exercises. It helps the total circulation of blood throughout the body, and thus has a direct effect on your overall feeling of health. There are things such as aerobics, jogging, swimming and many other exercises, which will benefit a weight loss program. Discuss the options with your doctor and take his advice in planning your exercise and weight loss program.

You and I know that weight loss is not a weekend sporting event, or a walk in the park. Taking your excess weight off, and even more importantly, keeping it off, is a very big deal! It isn't easy and it isn't simple.

The very number one reason why that is true is:
Weight loss is a psychological battle more than a physical one!

You have to have your head right before your body can follow. And what can you do to get your head in the game?

There are many things you can do. No one thing is going to solve all your weight loss problems. But I have found these CD's to be a tool that works, when I use them! That is why I am recommending them to you.

Here are some additional things you need to know about this product:
  • The Hypnosis Network is one of the best companies in existence. They are tops in customer service, as well as providing great products.

  • They are honest and fair, and quick to respond to any problems. They want you to be happy and they do all they can to make sure that you are. They are personable and caring about your needs and wishes.
Give these CD's a try. If you like them the way I do, it will be the best money you have ever spent towards helping you control your weight. If not, you get your money back. That is hard to beat!

Software You Can Use! — And Now Available Online!

A Note Weight Commander

The Weight Commander is an awesome program for your Journey. I highly recommend it to all those who are on a Journey of their own. It is a wonderful program to track your progress on any weight loss program you are using. You can read My Review of the Weight Commander or go straight to the source and check out this great software by following this link to Weight Commander. He has many tips and ideas throughout his program, which will help you to be successful on your Journey.

And for those who don't feel comfortable downloading software, or who cringe when Windows gives them another unnecessary warning about running perfectly safe software, Michael has created a wonderful online version of Weight Commander, where you can always access your information with privacy, with no worry about trying to transfer it from computer to computer when you switch. You can of course still get the software version (which continues to work very well, even on my Windows Vista computer), but the online version of Weight Commander is a wonderful new option! You make the choice, but you win either way. Smile

Calculating Your BMI

What Is BMI?

Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is a rule of thumb way of checking your body composition. It is good enough to where doctors often use it as a ballpark estimate of how much fat you are carrying. (My hip doctor used it for setting a target weight for my surgery.)

If you have a correct value for your percent of body fat, that is a better measure of your fat content. But BMI is a handy way to check how you are doing on your weight loss Journey.

BMI RANGEDescription
Over 40Very Obese
30 - 40Obese
25 - 30Overweight
19 - 25Normal
Under 19Underweight

If you check the Weight Watchers weight ranges...

...and calculate the BMI values for the given weights at your height, you will see that the numbers in the "Maximum For All Adults" is a BMI of 25, which is the top of the Normal Range. On the low end, they set the limit at a BMI of 20.

WARNING: Do not try to lose weight if you are not overweight—being underweight
 can be as dangerous as being overweight.

How To Calculate Your BMI

The Body Mass Index (BMI) in its native form is calculated by using this formula:

BMI = weight / ( height x height )

Unfortunately, for we who are dedicated to the English form of measurement at least, this assumes you are taking your weight in kilograms, and your height in meters. So, what do we do?

  1. You can convert your weight (multiply your weight in pounds by 0.4536) and your height (multiply your height in inches by 0.0254) to metric units and then plug those values into the original equation.

         If you are 5'4" and weigh 210 lbs.

         Convert height:

               5'4" = 64 inches.

               64 x 0.0254 = 1.6256 meters

         Convert your weight to kilograms

               210 x 0.4536 = 95.256 kilograms

         Use the new numbers in the equation:

               BMI = 95.256 / ( 1.6256 x 1.6256 )

                       = 36.05

    So your BMI would be 36, placing you in the Obese category.

  2. You can use your weight in pounds, and your height in inches and then use this formula:

    BMI = ( weight / (height x height ) ) x 703

         Once again, assume that you are 5'4" and weigh 210 lbs.

               BMI = ( 210 / ( 64 x 64 ) ) x 703

                        = 36.04

    So your BMI would again be 36, still placing you in the Obese category.

    I think that method is easier. Smile

If you are working hard, and doing all the right things, don't be discouraged if you don't lose weight, as long as you are losing inches; you may be gaining muscle mass, which weighs more than fat.

Tech Support: "Ok, we're going to check your modem settings. First thing we need to do is make sure all programs are closed."

Customer: "How do I know if everything is closed?"

Customer: "But...I'm in the basement. I don't have any windows here."

Food for Thought

Our Journey is not just about weight loss; it's about constantly learning new things…

Question:  If the airplane's black box is indestructible, why don't they make the whole plane out of the same material?

The body of an airplane is made up of lightweight materials, such as aluminum and plastic. But for the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder to survive a crash, they have to be enclosed in quarter-inch-thick, stainless steel boxes measuring about 10" by 10" by 5".  If the rest of the airplane were made of quarter-inch thick steel, it would be too heavy to fly.

Question: What is the most popular toothbrush color?
