Hi everyone!  How are all of you doing?

Are your days getting a bit chillier, as they are here in Spokane?  The colors are coming out in our trees and the foliage is beautiful.  I miss the Northeastern foliage but the reds and yellows are still pretty here in the Northwest. 

I have been getting emails asking about where I am on my Journey, so I thought I would talk to all of you about that today.

Okay, it's that time to go fill our favorite glass with sparkling water and settle into our most comfy chair for a nice visit.  Don’t forget to bring that great smile Smile of yours.

It's Time to Wake Up

Today I woke up a year older. Al was singing Happy Birthday to me and I was enjoying the comfort of his love for me. It has never wavered; just gotten stronger throughout the years. I am now 54 years old and in the worst shape I have ever been in.  I have medical issues, knocking at my door, that need to be addressed, and they keep me in a semi-depressed mood.  When does, "I've had it; enough is enough", kick in?

I started this lifelong Journey on Jan 5, 1998. It's hard for me to believe it's been over 12 years.  I wish I could tell you what drove me to start my Journey back in 1998, because if I could, I would be at Goal still.  All I can tell you is that everything came together back in late 1997/early 1998 for me to have a successful Journey to Goal.  I never wavered from my Program.  I told anyone who would listen how great this program is, and how I wouldn't even take a million dollars if it were offered to me to go off program.  I am as fond of money as you are, but at that time I wanted to reach Goal more than collect 1 million dollars

And reach Goal I did in September 1998.  Shortly thereafter, on October 19, 1998, I made Lifetime with Weight Watchers.  My blood pressure went from 120/80 to 90/52 and my heart rate was 55 at my physical shortly thereafter.  The health benefits were enormous when I lost that 100+ pounds.  My joints were not hurting as bad, I wasn't losing my breath walking up or down stairs, I could actually keep a steady pace walking on our hikes and most of all, I felt healthy and strong.  I became a new, happier and healthier person. I held my goal weight for a little over 3 years. 

So, if I was such a happier and healthier person why did I let it all unravel and fall apart on me, knowing the consequences?  Did I want to do this part of the Journey again? Of course not.  Who would?  As I write this, here I am, needing to lose about 100 pounds again, and in the worse shape I have ever been in.  I can barely walk due to joint problems—in both hips—and this needs to be addressed soon.  Everyday tasks have become insurmountable mountains at times.  Pain meds have become a part of my everyday life for my arthritis. There are no meds for the mental pain and anguish for letting myself get to this point. 

Most of you know me.  I'm a Weight Watcher through and through and I believe in their Program.  I know what to do to give me back my life. I know I have all of you to help hold me up when I slip and take a fall.  I know that I am not alone in this Journey, with the struggles and the success's.  I know that no matter what, I am loved for who I am and not how I look.  These things I know.  Without a doubt. 

So, if I know all these things, why aren't I doing it?  Why aren't I journaling, drinking my water, staying within my Points, going to my meetings and becoming an active part of my own life, making it better, not worse?  What is stopping me?  Why can't I move forward? 

You know we can make a million excuses for losing our way and I will say some are valid, but most are not.  The bottom line is we take the focus off of ourselves and after awhile it becomes easier to keep it off of ourselves—less commitment to our Journey, to our health and to ourselves. 

Enough IS enough!  I've decided to turn it all around starting today, on my 54th birthday.  Al and I are away on a little vacation in Leavenworth, WA, a quaint little town that is celebrating Oktoberfest right now.  Back home, our son LeRoy is watching our house, and keeping our cat, Frostbyte, company.  Here, we are renting the cutest little house, which has everything I need to start back on Program.  Al and I made a trip to the local Safeway and stocked up on healthy, OP food, so there was no way we were going off program this week. My Journal is out and ready to go.  By the end of the week I'll be well on my way to being back in charge of my life again, instead of life running me over, leaving me in a dilapidated state.  I will go back to my meetings again, no matter what that darn scale says.  It is ONLY a number after all. 

Obviously, trying to figure out what motivated me in 1998 to start my Journey, is lost to me and probably will always be lost.  What wasn't lost was remembering how great I felt on the Journey and then through maintenance.  What wasn't lost was that honeymoon phase which, to tell you the truth, lasted me the whole time at goal.  What wasn't lost to me, was the knowing that I had it in me to embark on this Journey, be successful at it and then help others along the way

I want that life back and I'm going to go get it.

Don't Drink Your Calories

High calorie drinks can make a huge dent in your calories for the day, leaving you unsatisfied and still hungry. Here are a few eye-openers about some of your drinks.

  • Ice blended coffee can have 670 calories and 22 grams of mostly bad fat
  • A 12-ounce can of regular soda has about 150 calories and 40 grams of pure sugar carbohydrates
  • A 12-ounce beer is about 160 calories
  • A 6-ounce glass of wine is about 150 calories
  • A shot of hard liquor is about 100 calories
  • A margarita is about 275 calories

Sure makes you think twice about drinking your calories, doesn't it?

Chicken with Cider Mustard Sauce

The tart, sweet sauce really gives the chicken that extra pep!

     Makes 4 servings

     Ingredients

          1 1/2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts
          2 tbsp safflower oil, divided
          3 shallots, minced
          2 honeycrisp (my favorite) or gala apples, peeled, cored & diced
          1 cup apple cider
          3 tbsp Dijon mustard
          Pepper

Place the chicken in a plastic freezer bag and pound to a thickness of 1/2". Heat 1 tbsp of oil in a large skillet over medium heat.  Saute the chicken in two batches until browned on both sides.  Transfer the kitchen to a plate and cover with foil to keep warm.

Using the same skillet, ad the remaining 1 tbsp of oil and saute the shallots and half of the diced apples for 3 minutes.  Add the cider and boil until it is reduced by half, about 5 minutes.  Remove from the heat and mix in the remaining apple and the mustard. Season with pepper to taste.  Pour the sauce over the chicken and serve.

Per serving: 340 calories, 11g fat, 2g fiber, 25g carbs, 35g protein, 360mg sodium,
1.5g sat fat  *7.5

What can you do to get your mind onboard with your weight loss desires?
     —I honestly believe this is an answer to a dilemma that we all face.



Step Up Your Protein

Did you know that by replacing just one serving of red meat a day with poultry, fish, or nuts may lower your risk of heart disease.

Researchers have been tracking more than 84,000 women aged 30 to 55 in the Nurses' Health Study.  Through these studies they have found that those that consumed more red meat and high-fat dairy had a higher risk of heart disease.  Those that ate more fish, poultry and nuts were found to have a lower risk.

Conclusion:  Women could lower their heart disease risk by 30 percent if they replaced one serving a day of red meat with nuts, by 24 percent if they replaced red meat with fish, by 19 percent if they replaced red meat with poultry, and by 13 percent if they replaced red meat with a low-fat dairy food.

I don't know about you but from this research I'm going to be trying to eat more fish, poultry, nuts, and low-fat dairy instead of red meat if it will help decrease my risk of heart disease.

It is a wonderful program to track your progress on any weight loss program you are using. He has many tips and ideas throughout his program, which will help you to be successful on your Journey.

And for those who don't feel comfortable downloading software, or who cringe when Windows gives them another unnecessary warning about running perfectly safe software, Michael has created a wonderful online version of Weight Commander, where you can always access your information with privacy, with no worry about trying to transfer it from computer to computer when you switch. You can of course still get the software version (which continues to work very well, even on my Windows Vista computer), but the online version of Weight Commander is a wonderful new option!
