Hi everyone!  How is everything going in your neck of the woods?  Has the fall weather arrived yet?  Here in Spokane we are experiencing some hot weather in the 80's and 90's.  Still, we've had some cooler days and our evenings are cooling off; fall is in the air!

You probably have noticed that we are kicking off something new on the web page. We are calling it DWLZ FUN ZONE, and we hope you will drop in and take a look at it. I think you will enjoy what you will find there.

Today I would like to talk about recommitting to your Journey. 

It's time to go fill that favorite glass of yours with sparkling ice water and settle into your comfy chair.  Don’t forget to bring that great smile Smile of yours.

Recommitting to Your Journey

How many of you have forgotten to take care of yourself?  How long since you've been on Program and in control?  For me, it's been way too long since I've taken care of ME.  It's time to get back that feeling of being in control.  It's time my joints got a break from all that extra weight on them.  It's time I got back on my Journey to a healthy, happier ME.
 
So, are you also finally to a point that you are fed up with your weight and unhealthy lifestyle?  Do you want to do something about it?  What will it be?  Have you given the Journey you are about to embark on a lot of thought?  Do you want it with all your heart? What program will you use? How committed are you going to be to your Journey?  These are just a few of the questions that should be going through your mind as you think about what path you will take.

It really doesn't matter if you have 10 pounds to lose or 100 pounds to lose you are never alone on this Journey.  Initially, I had over 100 pounds to lose.  Many of my friends had more than 50 pounds to lose. 

I remember one particular time at my Weight Watcher meeting when a new member opened up about how she had to lose 10 pounds. Most of the members were thinking, "What are YOU doing here?"  In reality, it is very hard to lose ONLY 10 pounds, especially when you are so close to your goal weight.  Instead of saying "What are YOU doing here?" we need to congratulate her for taking action before she had 50 or 100 pounds to lose.

My plan of choice is Weight Watchers.  I find that program to be the best Weight Loss/Healthy Lifestyle program around.  I can eat what I want, when I want and the choice is completely mine.  There are no limitations on what types of food I can eat.  The Points system is one of the easiest to implement and one that I continue to use.  

I started out on the Original 123 Success Points plan and that is the one I've stuck with. Weight Watchers is great because as the years go by they are always improving their system, whether it is Points, Core or something else.  Meanwhile, you are free to use the Program of choice that you are most comfortable with.  I have members emailing me about the very old 1972 Weight Watchers Program because that is the one they are most comfortable with.  It works for them.  So, whatever program you choose make sure it works for you.

Recommitting is a great way to get that "newbie" feeling back.  What exactly is a "newbie" feeling?  It is a feeling of excitement, adventure and confidence in learning new things to improve ourselves, both mentally and physically.  It is that feeling of constantly being energized by everything around us—yes, you see many things in a whole new light.  You cannot stop talking about your new lifestyle and all you've learned.  You are smiling a lot and wondering why people haven't all started this fantastic Journey.  Oh, what a feeling! You will also notice that your "newbie" feeling is contagious and before you know it some of your friends and family have jumped on the bandwagon.  Yep, that is the feeling I always want to have! 

You know, I sit and wonder why in the world I would let myself gain most of my weight back.  Have any of you done that?  Just thought about it.  Of course, I can come up with a hundred reasons why but the reality of it is I just stopped taking care of myself.  Once I did that, my Journey spiraled out of control.  I was no longer the one in charge. 

One of the main questions you have to ask yourself when recommitting to your Journey is "Are you ready to recommit?"  You must be ready to commit to your Journey with no exceptions. 

What does "commitment" mean?  It means:

  • Setting aside time each day to learning your new program and putting it to work for you.
  •  
  • Making realistic goals.
  •  
  • Being ready to make lifestyle changes.
  •  
  • Putting yourself first and knowing that by doing so, you will be a much happier, confident and content person to be around.
  •  
  • Having a positive attitude about exercising, especially if you don't like exercise.
  •  
  • You are ready most of all to change your life to a healthier one which in turn will give you more energy, more confidence, higher self-esteem and a thinner YOU.

As many of you know it's very hard to get that control back once you've lost it.  It's not impossible but it's hard.  You have to sit down and actually set a date to recommit.  When that date arrives, you are recommitted to your Journey—no ifs, ands, or buts. 

I recommitted to my Journey on September 1st of this year.  It is going well and I'm definitely in that "newbie" or "honeymoon" stage where I'm excited, eating healthy and most of all, strong on Program. I cannot help but share the enthusiasm I feel. 

This time around (oh yes, there have been others) I decided to not put too much pressure on myself.  I track my exercise, which "Enjoying Weight Loss" track I listen to, water intake, weekly weigh-in, daily Points consumed and how I felt about the day.  This keeps everything in perspective without going overboard.   I feel like I'm in control again.  Oh, what a feeling!

Ways to Cut 100 Calories 

          Instead of your normal two hot dogs, try having just one.
          Have carrots instead of corn.
          Instead of regular chili with no beans try turkey chili with beans.
          Omit the cheese from your burger
          Don’t have the second helping of mashed potatoes
          Instead of peaches packed in syrup use the peaches packed in water/natural
          Instead of ice cream try frozen grapes
          Substitute three ounces of scallops for three ounces of lean beef in your stir-fry.
         Have a single scoop of ice cream instead of a double-scoop.
         At fast-food restaurants have a regular taco instead of a super taco.
         Replace one large flour tortilla with one six-inch corn tortilla.

Portion Sizes Tips

I love being able to eat on Program while out and about.  Here are a few portion size tips.

About 1 cup or 1 medium fruit is your Fist.
About 1 oz. cheese or meat is your Thumb.
About 1 tablespoon is your Thumb-tip.
About 1 teaspoon is your Fingertip.
Your Palm (minus your fingers) is about 3 ounces cooked meat, poultry or fish.

A Note Weight Commander

The Weight Commander is an awesome program for your Journey. I highly recommend it to all those who are on a Journey of their own. It is a wonderful program to track your progress on any weight loss program you are using. He has many tips and ideas throughout his program, which will help you to be successful on your Journey.

Getting Old is Such Fun!

An elderly couple noticed that they were beginning to forget many little things around the house. They were afraid that this could be dangerous, as one might forget to turn off the stove and start a fire. They decided to go see their physician to get some help.

The doctor told them that many older people find it useful to write little reminder notes to themselves, and the husband and wife thought this was a great idea.

When they got home, the wife said, "Dear, will you please go to the kitchen and get me a dish of ice cream? And perhaps you should write it down so you won't forget?"

"Nonsense," replied the husband, "I can remember a dish of ice cream!"

"Well," countered the wife, "I'd also like some strawberries, too! You'd better write it down so you don't forget."

"Don't be silly," was the irate reply. "I can do that."
