Welcome

Halloween is behind us and we are well on our way to Thanksgiving. Did everyone have a great Halloween? Did you get the leftover candy out of your house?  Al and I bought candy that was point-friendly so if any were left it would be safe to have around.

Do you have your tall glass of sparkling water?  How about that beautiful smile Smile of yours; are you smiling?  Okay!  Get settled into your comfy chair and let's get started.

One of Life's Detours

We have been going through a very hectic time in our lives, as Al's mom is facing some challenges brought on by age and other factors. We are working on providing her with the care and attention that she requires, and that has made our lives far more complicated. Getting the Dotti's Newsletter issue 59 has been more difficult than many of the previous issues, due the new responsibilities we have taken on. We are striving to find a stable and more "routine" existence as we settle into our new life situation. We appreciate your patience as we make this difficult transition.

Dealing with Stress

How many times have you woken up with the best outlook?  How many times did that great outlook get shattered within an hour of waking up?  Let's see - your car won't start, your AAA just expired and you forgot to renew, your sister can't pick up the kids from school - you get the picture.  All of this adds up to stress and more stress. Today we are going to talk a bit about how to calm yourself during these stressful times.  Next time you're stressed and need to get back to a calm feeling try some of these tips.

  • Make sure you take the time to get yourself together. Try setting your alarm clock 15 minutes earlier than when the household wakes up.  Use this time to sit quietly and appreciate the day that is before you.  Better yet, bundle up and go outside for your quiet time.  Research has shown that exposure to natural light, especially in the morning, triggers a rise in the levels of mood-boosting serotonin.

  • A photo reminder will relax you in no time. For a lot of women, looking at a photograph of loved ones is an easy way to reduce your stress and bring you back to a calm state. Keep a photograph on your desk or somewhere in your house where you can see the photo clearly.  Look at that picture a couple of times a day.  By doing so you will calmly replace the stressful feelings with a sense of calm and your breathing will slow back down, helping you relax.

  • Smile, smile, smile.  Stop and smile at your kids, your spouse or your pet. Take the time to really appreciate them. Remind yourself that you're running around feeling frazzled and stressed because you love them.  Did you know that when you're really smiling, it relaxes you because it's physically impossible for your body to feel stressed?  A smile is so much nicer than a frown, isn't it?

  • Move! Regular exercise is a good way to raise your tolerance for the high levels of adrenaline released during stressful situations.  What do you do when you are in a stressful situation but you are only able to do a little bit of walking around the office?  Believe it or not a few short strolls around the office during the day helps in getting your stress level down.  When you sit at your desk all day you tend to stiffen up and start hunching over your desk.  A good plan, when at work at a desk, is to get up every hour or so to stretch your legs and take some deep breaths.  By doing so, you are giving your body a much-needed break, and you'll be much more productive when you return to work.
  • Listen to some music.  Research has shown that listening to certain kinds of music can increase feel-good endorphin and serotonin levels, along with reducing physical and psychological stress.  Arthur Harvey, a neuromusicologist at the University of Hawaii, recommends listening to just a few minutes of classical compositions, particularly those by Bach, to help you mellow out.  You can test out this theory by downloading any of the free classical performances from classiccat.net.  Try listening to your local classical musical station instead of the news  (which will stress anyone out!) during your commute to and from the office.

  • Don't just sit and wait, do something.  How many of you that have small children to pick up from school get a bit antsy while waiting for them?  Why not use that time to do some deep breathing while you walk around the parking lot.  Another way to relax and settle down is to take a book or magazine along and read them. Better yet, keep them in the car so you will always have them available. When you focus your attention on something other than your watch, you give your brain a chance to relax and settle down.

  • Create a ritual.  After getting home from work make sure you take a quick break before starting your evening routine.   This will lower your blood pressure and stress hormone levels.  Before you even think about going through your mail, checking your answer machine or heading to the kitchen to prepare dinner, try changing out of your work clothes.  This will help decompress you.  Try pampering yourself by putting on something that's warm and comfy, like your favorite jeans or a fleece sweat suit and a pair of slippers.  Being comfy is a sure-fire way to relax me!

As you can see from above there are ways to lower your stress quickly.  Sometimes life-stresses just appear out of nowhere and if you don't know how to handle this stress, while working through the issue at hand, you will find yourself frazzled and stressed to the limit.

Stress is dangerous. Stress is one of the main reasons people overeat or just eat the wrong stuff while trying to stay on Program. It is very important to limit the amount of stress in your life.  I know, easier said than done. Let's try some of the ideas above to get stress under control to the best of our ability.  Smile, smile, smile!

Until next time…

Hugs! Dotti

Dotti's Update

Hi everyone.  Where did October go?  Time is flying by so fast I cannot keep track of the days.

I’ve continued to work on staying on Program to the best of my abilities each day.  My stress level is a bit high right now due to some family issues that need to be addressed. I listen to my "Enjoying Weight Loss" Hypnosis CDs" whenever I can to help keep my 'head' in the game, usually a couple times a week.   When I miss listening to my CD's I can tell it.  So my goal is to continue to listen at least a couple of times a week, especially during this time.

I'm so sorry I have not updated my update pages below. I will do that as soon as possible.

You can find my updates on My Lifetime Journey page on DWLZ at:

http://www.dwlz.com/dotcomeback/updates2Page6.html

We are heading into the Thanksgiving Holiday.  We all have a lot to be thankful for, so let's make some plans to have a wonderful Thanksgiving!  Have an awesome couple of weeks until we meet again.

Hugs! Dotti

Positive Thought

We can reverse years of damage to our bodies by deciding to raise our standards for ourselves, then living differently. Old wounds heal, injuries repair, and the whole system improves with just a few changes in what we put into our bodies and how we move them.

Pumpkin Soup

According to research, pumpkin may aid in lowering post-meal blood sugar in diabetics.  On top of that it is full of antioxidants, which may protect against cancer.

Serves 6

Recipe Ingredients:

1/2 large onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
15-oz can solid-pack pumpkin
3 1/2 cups fat-free, low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth
1/2 cup fat-free milk
1/2 tsp. hot pepper sauce
6 tbsp fat-free sour cream

Directions:

In a nonstick saucepot lightly coated with cooking spray, saute the onion and garlic over medium heat for 5 minutes, or until tender. Add the pumpkin, then gradually stir in the broth and milk.

Add the hot pepper sauce, salt and pepper, if you are using it. Cook until heated through, approximately 5 minutes. Ladle into bowls and top each serving with 1 tbsp sour cream.

Healthy Ways to Top Your Toast

There are many ways to top your toast, unhealthy and healthy.  We are going to take a look at some healthy alternatives to the not-so-healthy regulars.  The nutrition info is based on 1 tbsp of each spread.

Topping
YUM
YUCK

Butter
[102 Cal, 12g Fat] *2.5

Contains a very small amount
of trans fat, less than a half
gram a serving ~ a lot less than
other spreads & margarine.
Very high in saturated
fat, so limit your
portion.
Margarine
[102 Cal, 11g Fat] *2.5
Tub margarine contains no
saturated fat, and many kinds
are free of trans fat, too
Steer clear of stick margarine,
which does contain trans fat.
Make sure your tub margarine
does not contain partially
hydrogenated oil (trans fat).
Cottage Cheese
[14 Cal, 1g Fat] *0.5
A great brain boost.  Contains
amino acid tyrosine, which perks
up the gray matter. Rich in
calcium and protein.
Choose low fat (2% or less),
not the 4% milk-fat - this will
keep the fat down.
Cream Cheese
[51 Cal, 5g Fat] *1.5
For fewer calories and a bit of
protein choose cream cheese
over butter or margarine.
Go with the low-fat version.
Watch serving size.  A bagel
can easily use several
tablespoons.
Peanut Butter
[95 Cal, 8g Fat] *2.5
It is packed with protein, 4g/tbsp
and good monounsaturated fat.
High in calories so be careful.
Natural (no hydrogenated oil)
is best.
Hummus
[26 Cal, 1g Fat] *0.5
A great low-fat, low-calorie choice
made with olive oil (good for heart).
Doesn't have as much protein as
peanut butter or cottage cheese.

Bloating - Bad Habits That Bring It On

Bloating seems to be a common problem to many of us on our Journey.  According to Max Tomlinson, author of Clean Up Your Diet, you should avoid the following "don'ts".

Eating While Walking:  When you are not sitting down, blood that is needed for proper digestion is directed to your leg muscles instead.

Stressing Out:  When you're tense, your body goes into fight-or-flight mode, causing blood to shunt away from your digestive tract and into your extremities.  You can chill out by practicing deep breathing, doing yoga or becoming a tea drinker.  Research shows that tea drinkers handle stress better than others.

Taking Certain Medications:  Antibiotics go after good as well as bad bugs in your body. If you are taking them, it is recommended that you add a serving of high-probiotic food, such as yogurt or a probiotic supplement more than two hours after taking the medication.  A few other drugs that wreak havoc on your system are Anti-fungal medication, including Monistat cream and Mycelex, antacids and aspirin.  It is okay to increase your probiotic intake at the same time you are taking these medications.

Software You Can Use! — And Now Available Online!

A Note Weight Commander

The Weight Commander is an awesome program for your Journey. I highly recommend it to all those who are on a Journey of their own. It is a wonderful program to track your progress on any weight loss program you are using. You can read My Review of the Weight Commander or go straight to the source and check out this great software by following this link to Weight Commander. He has many tips and ideas throughout his program, which will help you to be successful on your Journey.

And for those who don't feel comfortable downloading software, or who cringe when Windows gives them another unnecessary warning about running perfectly safe software, Michael has created a wonderful online version of Weight Commander, where you can always access your information with privacy, with no worry about trying to transfer it from computer to computer when you switch. You can of course still get the software version (which continues to work very well, even on my Windows Vista computer), but the online version of Weight Commander is a wonderful new option! You make the choice, but you win either way. Smile

Soups On - Good vs. Bad

Not all soups are created equal.  Soup is a great meal on those cold evenings but you have to be careful of which ones to eat.  Some of them have very large amounts of calories and fat.  Below is a guideline for making a healthy choice.  Nutritional values are based on a one-cup serving.

If you are craving… Creamy… Dig Into… Cream of Potato [180 cal/4 g fat] *4
    Steer Clear of… Cream of Chicken [240 cal/16 g fat] *6.5

If you are craving… Spicy… Dig Into… Chicken Gumbo [120 cal/2 g fat] *2.5
    Steer Clear of… Fiesta Nacho Cheese [240 cal/16 g fat] *6.5

If you are craving… Hearty… Dig Into… Chicken with Rice [140 cal/3 g fat] *3
    Steer Clear of… Bean with Bacon [340 cal/8 g fat] *7.5

Comic Relief

Why Is it?

Why is it that if someone tells you that there are a billion stars in the universe, you'll believe him, but if he tells you that a wall has wet paint, you'll have to touch it to be sure?

Why do we press harder on our remote control when we know the batteries are flat?

Deep in the jungle, why doesn't Tarzan have a beard?

If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular?

Why isn't "phonetic" spelled the way it sounds?

If money doesn't grow on trees, then why do banks have branches?

Why is it that people who spend their day sitting down often earn more than people who spend their day working on their feet?

Ever notice that when you blow in a dog's face he doesn't like it, but when you take him for a ride in the car, he sticks his head out the window?

Why is it that people say they "slept like a baby" when babies wake up every two hours?

    ~Quick & Simple Magazine

Did you know…?

Our Journey is not just about weight loss; it's about constantly learning new things…

The awful truth is that these famous masterworks, The Wasteland by T.S. Eliot and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein were originally titled, He Do the Police in Different Voices, Trimalchio in West Egg  and The Man From Mars.

The awful truth is that these cartoon rock-and-roll divas' singing voices, Honey Bear of The Sugar Bears, Melody of Josie and The Pussycats and Ann Margrock on The Flinstones were actually voiced by Kim Carnes, Cheryl Ladd (under the name Cheri Moore) and Ann-Margaret.
