Welcome

Halloween is just around the corner!  Are you ready for it?  Can you believe it is here again already?  Today we will be talking about how we can enjoy Halloween without going off our Program.  Yes, believe it or not, it can be done.

Do you have your tall glass of sparkling water?  How about that beautiful smile Smile of yours; are you smiling?  Okay!  Get settled into your comfy chair and let's get started.

Enjoying Halloween Without Blowing Your Program

Happy Halloween

Halloween is the start of the celebration period of the year.  First Halloween, then holiday after holiday until after New Years.  How will we ever survive this onslaught of candy, homemade baked goods—comfort food?  Well, let's start with Halloween, which will be here in a little over a week. Let me ask you a few questions before we get started.  How many of you have planned Halloween to fit into your Program?  What is your plan for the leftover candy?  How about that Halloween party you've been invited to—do you have a plan to help you stay on your Program?  Let's see a show of hands for those who have no plan for Halloween?  Okay, looks like we have to come up with a plan to enjoy Halloween without blowing our Program.

Let's look at a few ways for limiting our candy and sweets on—as well as before and after—Halloween.

  • Buy only candy that you don't like, therefore you will not be tempted to eat some. How many times do we buy candy that we like to hand out to all the eager young trick-or-treaters?  I can tell you that in the past I have always done that.  Since I've been on Program, I only buy candy I don't like because I don't want to wear it on my hips, so to speak.  When you buy candy you like, you are setting yourself up for failure on Program.  You are planning to eat some of that candy or you would not have bought the kind you like.  Let's change that this Halloween. If you are planning to buy some candy or goodies to hand out to our trick-or-treaters please buy the kind you don't like; the kind you won't be tempted to eat.  You will be so happy you did.  Good luck!

  • Wait until the last minute to buy your Halloween candy. Don't buy the candy as soon as you see it on the shelf, because I guarantee you that it will be gone before Halloween gets here.  I don't know how many times in my life that I have bought Halloween candy weeks before I actually had to hand it out only to have to re-purchase the candy for the kids.  I'm sure you can all guess where it went? Why set yourself up for failure on your Program.  Why not wait this year to buy that Halloween candy. By doing so, you will be in control of the candy and not the other way around.  A good feeling for sure!

  • Make sure the candy is lowfat.  If the candy you buy is lowfat it will do far less damage if you sneak a piece.  I've been known to eat a piece of candy even though I knew I didn't like it, just because it is the only candy available.  On top of that, the whole time I'm eating it I'm saying, "I really don't like this piece of candy."  Of course, I still finish the candy because that's what I do.  I know this about myself so I really try hard to not set myself up for failure on Program.

  • Try handing out something other than candy. I had a very good friend who had a son with diabetes and he really had to watch eating the candy.  They decided one year to hand out nickels.  What a great treat—money!  Maybe instead of money you could try snack baggies of pretzels.  One year I gave out pencils and they really were a huge hit, believe it or not.  You don't have to stick to the traditional way.

How about those Halloween parties—are you prepared to stay on Program while attending the party?  Let's look at a few ways that can help you do just that.

  • Bring a healthy snack, so you have something to eat that keeps you on Program. How easy is that? Plus, I will bet you that there are others at that party that need that healthy snack to stay on their Program too.  By bringing your healthy snack you are back in the drivers seat and in control of what goes into your mouth.

  • Don't leave home without your large water bottle. Chug, chug, chug away! Drinking water will keep you full and away from the snack table.  The added bonus is that water is great for you!  Having a bottle of water in your hands will also keep that hand from taking easy-to-grab food.

  • Make sure you eat before you go.  By doing this you are guaranteed not to be hungry at the party and will be doing a lot less nibbling while there.  I know the last thing I want to do, when my stomach is screaming it's full, is to eat more food.

  • Choose fruit over candy and snacks, when available. Most parties have some healthy choices.  Try to focus on them instead of the candy and snacks.  I know, easier said than done! When you go towards the sweets say to yourself, "Do I like it enough to wear it?"  I'll bet your answer is no!
  • Volunteer to help while there.  Take pictures, clean up, make sure they all have their food, or even run the Halloween contest. If you are too busy to eat... well, problem solved. Smile

  • Try to focus on your family and friends. This is a chance to catch up with some of your friends and family.  Use it.  Anybody who knows me, knows I love to talk and visit. When you are busy talking and visiting with your friends eating is out of the question.  Think of how much 'catching up' you can do by staying away from the buffet table.

  • Sit far, far away from the food table.  There is no need to sit there and punish yourself, drooling over the food you desperately want but can't have because you know it's a red-light food.  You won't stop at just one.  So, sit far, far away from those temptations.

How many of you work at an office?  I'll bet that most of you have seen, or walk by, candy on your fellow employee's desk.  Not fun, is it? Why not politely ask that person to put the candy in the desk or somewhere else out of sight?  Of course, you will have the ones who won't oblige you.  What do you do then?  You could ask them to please put the candy in a colored container with a solid lid so you don't see the actual candy or hear it calling your name. (If you explain why, it might help. Sometimes, when a coworker understands that this is a real struggle for you, cooperation is easier to get.)  It is a known fact that we will eat more of the candy when it's visible because the visibility makes us think about it more.  Every time you see the candy dish you have to make a decision whether  you are going to eat any or not.

If you do start nibbling on those fun size candies please try and keep the wrappers where you can see them.  They will be a reminder of how much you've consumed and just how quickly the calories are adding up.  Scary, if you think about how fast you can get 4-6 pieces of candy consumed.  So, be accountable.  Visuals really are a wonderful way to scare you back on Program!

Try to take a short walk on your break.  You will get some fresh air, which will invigorate you and help you over those mid-morning and mid-afternoon slumps where you ‘think’ you are hungry.

We have discussed a few ways to celebrate Halloween successfully on Program.  I do hope that you will try and make it your most successful Halloween ever!

Until next time…

Hugs! Dotti

Dotti's Update

Hi everyone.  Here it is already time for another update. I have been going to Physical Therapy for my left knee that was injured (sprained ligament) during my car accident on Sept 10th.  It seems to be helping.

I’ve continued to work on staying on Program to the best of my ability on any given day.  My stress level is a bit high right now due to some family issues that need to be addressed and to my injuries from the car accident. I listen to my "Enjoying Weight Loss" Hypnosis CDs" whenever I can to help keep my 'head' in the game, usually a couple times a week.   I've eaten a bit more than I wanted to at times but for the most part I'm hanging in there. Just as I seem to get going again something gets in the way. I'm no quitter so I'm just going to take it one day at a time, with no guilt and moving on.

You can find my updates on My Lifetime Journey page on DWLZ at:

http://www.dwlz.com/dotcomeback/updates2Page6.html

Let’s all work hard these next couple of weeks on our Program. Most of all, try very hard to enjoy your new lifestyle. I'm going to focus on getting back to where my 'life before the accident' was, as quickly as I can. Have an awesome couple of weeks until we meet again.

Hugs! Dotti

Sandy F. of WA is a Penny's customer and tasted our test kitchen peanut butter cookie
COMING VERY SOON!

"I got the PB cookie in today's mail. OMG!!!!!!! Can it get any better than this?
Peanut butter is my downfall and you hit the bull's eye yet again.
Thank you so much for the sample. The problem is......how soon can we order them?"

Al had this to say after tasting our Peanut Butter Cookies (which will be announced in Penny's newsletter very soon):

Your cookies showed up today, and Penny, I liked them a lot! I ate half of the first one at room temperature, and then heated the other half up in the microwave. That tasted so good that I heated the entire second cookie before eating it.

The cookies had a very strong peanut butter flavor, and they were very good! The cookies were not dry—quite moist—and the flavor was excellent.

I honestly hadn’t planned to eat the second one straight away, but the first one tasted so good that the second one was calling my name “loudly.” They were both delicious!

Motivation

“Taking the Journey”

You are beginning a personal journey.
At times you may expect the answers to
come quickly, but try to be patient;
some answers may take a lifetime to be revealed to you.

Though you may be a little uncertain now
and your confidence may be shaken,
you will stand on your own feet soon enough.
Your legs will grow to be strong under you;
they will take you where you want to go.

You'll make mistakes along the way;
a fork in the road may present a path that
you later decide was the wrong way to go.
Take the time to learn from your mistakes,
but don't be too hard on yourself.

You are learning to make your own choices,
and there is great joy in that.
You are a human being who is embarking
on the important journey of discovering
who you are and what you have to offer.
Celebrate your uniqueness, and you will
triumph on your life's journey.

Software You Can Use! — And Now Available Online!

A Note Weight Commander

The Weight Commander is an awesome program for your Journey. I highly recommend it to all those who are on a Journey of their own. It is a wonderful program to track your progress on any weight loss program you are using. You can read My Review of the Weight Commander or go straight to the source and check out this great software by following this link to Weight Commander. He has many tips and ideas throughout his program, which will help you to be successful on your Journey.

And for those who don't feel comfortable downloading software, or who cringe when Windows gives them another unnecessary warning about running perfectly safe software, Michael has created a wonderful online version of Weight Commander, where you can always access your information with privacy, with no worry about trying to transfer it from computer to computer when you switch. You can of course still get the software version (which continues to work very well, even on my Windows Vista computer), but the online version of Weight Commander is a wonderful new option! You make the choice, but you win either way. Smile

Did you know…?

Our Journey is not just about weight loss; it's about constantly learning new things…

Pomology is the study of fruit and of the cultivation of fruit.

Tomatoes and cucumbers are fruits.*

Apples, not caffeine, are more efficient for waking you up in the morning.

Fresh apples float because 25% of their volume is air.

The most widely eaten fruit in America is the banana.

~The Book of Useless Information by Noel Botham & The Useless Information Society

*Note from Al: The context will determine if this statement about tomatoes and cucumbers is true or false…

If you are speaking in a botanical, scientific context, then pumpkin, tomato, cucumber, capsicum, and squash are FRUITS because they all have seeds. If you are speaking in culinary terms, they can all be properly called VEGETABLES.
