Five More Ways To Drop the Pounds
Get enough ZZZ's. Cutting back on shut-eye interrupts REM sleep, which in turn affects your metabolic patterns, says Michael Meyers, Ph.D., an exercise physiologist and associate professor at the University of Houston. The result? You feel hungrier and eat more.
Don't sweat your shape. A recent study at the Stanford University school of Medicine suggests that women who are extremely unhappy with their body size are less likely to lose weight than those who are only moderately unhappy with their shape. Embrace a more self-accepting view to help insure success.
Watch out for "hidden" calories. You may not pay attention to the calories in, say, a soft drink or a cafe latte, but they do add up, notes David Creel, program director at the Indiana University Center for Weight Management in Indianapolis. Even a daily glass of wine can result in an extra 15 pounds at year's end.
Concentrate on the means more than the end. If you focus solely on dropping pounds, you will set yourself up for failure, says Creel. Instead, set measurable, behavior-oriented goals, such as committing to work out three times a week.
Don't go too long without eating. You'll curb hunger and burn calories more efficiently if you plan small snacks every few hours. You'll also keep your energy up, points out Susan Kleiner, Ph.D., R.D., author of Power Eating (Human Kinetics, 1998).
